Church and Historical Village Structure

The parish church of Gavelli is dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo. Most of the frescoes in San Michele Arcangelo were created in 1518 by Giovanni Spagna and his students. The apse depicts the apparition of the archangel on Monte Gargano. At present, the parish church hosts only a joint patronal festival in honor of San Michele Arcangelo and Beato Benedetto, held around Ferragosto.

The settlement structure also helps explain Gavelli as a historically shaped place. It follows the classic layout of a hillside settlement: above the triangular arrangement of buildings lies the castle core. Parallel streets and steep lanes structure the ensemble. Landscape in the Alta Val Casana

The spring-fed pond “Il Laghetto” is one of the few natural mountain ponds in Umbria. The Laghetto e Piano di Gavelli protected area lies in the Alta Val Casana, southeast of the village of Gavelli. It includes the habitat type “Apennine beech forests with Taxus and Ilex”.

The Piana di Gavelli is surrounded by extensive meadows and pastures as well as imposing centuries-old Turkey oaks. As a result, alongside the mountain pond and forests, open grazing areas and old tree landscapes are also central to the region’s natural environment. These different landscape features give your planning a clear direction if you would like to combine quiet nature observation with outdoor activity.

Hiking Trails with Gavelli as a Destination

The SP 471 connects Sant'Anatolia di Narco with Gavelli. The Sentiero della Valcasana leads from Sant'Anatolia di Narco via CAI Trail No. 540 to Scheggino and from there via CAI Trail No. 512, “Strada delle Ferriere”, to Gavelli.

From Gavelli, more experienced hikers can reach the summit of Coscerno via CAI Trail No. 537 and then Trail No. 539. When choosing between sightseeing in the village and hiking, the deciding factor is therefore primarily the focus you want: San Michele Arcangelo and the hillside settlement structure on the one hand, and the landscape experience at the Piana di Gavelli and the trails to Coscerno on the other.

Recently, a local cooperative rediscovered the cultivation of Triticum durum dicoccum in the fields around Gavelli and produces limited quantities of it. This agricultural specialty adds to the image of a place where religious art, pastureland, a protected area and local production exist side by side.
