Bonsciano amid rolling hills and history

Bonsciano combines historical traces with a rural setting and a local history that can be traced through specific buildings. Its history is reflected in former religious buildings, an older settlement core and the structural remains of Castello di Montalbano. Rolling Hills and Rural Experiences

Agriturismo Sant’Illuminato is located in Vocobolo Spaglioni in the hamlet of Bonsciano. It lies in a hilly landscape at an altitude of around 300 metres and offers panoramic views across the plain to the Tiber Valley. Regional products made locally can be sampled there. During the warm season, guests can relax by the swimming pool. A 10,000 m² lake is also located near Agriturismo Sant’Illuminato, where sport fishing is possible.

Historic Buildings in the Village

Villa Caselli is a historic villa in the hamlet of Bonsciano. The Sant’Illuminato farmhouse dates from the late 17th century. During its restoration, the original building materials were preserved wherever possible. Villa Caselli and the farmhouse add two different architectural points of reference to the local history.

Present-day Bonsciano lies below an older settlement core. This core included a former church and a former primary school. The former church of Santo Stefano stands on the slope above the plain of Bonsciano, on the right bank of the Tiber. The church of Bonsciano existed by 1314 at the latest; the name “Bonsciano” has been used continuously since 1718.

The Castle, Old Road and Basilica

The remains of Castello di Montalbano include sections of the outer and inner curtain walls, an entrance with a round sandstone arch, and a church structure. An old road from Castello di Montalbano crossed the ridge, passed by the church of Santo Stefano and descended into the plain of Bonsciano.

Around 1250, Guido, son of the margrave Rainero Raineri di Montemisano, was lord of Castello di Montalbano and Villa Bonsciano. The Basilica Madonna del Transito in Canoscio lies 3½ kilometres northeast of Bonsciano, was consecrated in 1878 and has three naves.
