Cibottola between the Castello and Rolling Hills

Cibottola combines impressive architectural history, sacred art and a distinctive landscape with a trekking route lasting several hours. The Castello di Cibottola

The Castello di Cibottola was built around the 9th century. It stands at an altitude of 471 m southeast of Pietrafitta, on the crest of a hill in the valley of the Nestore River. Significant surviving features include the entrance gate with the original drawbridge gate leaf, large sections of the surrounding wall and a roughly 20-meter-high heptagonal tower. This tower contains a bell weighing five hundredweight, donated in 1850 by Pietro Tocchi, rector of the University of Perugia.

San Fortunato and Its Frescoes

The Church of San Fortunato, built before the year 1000, is located within the Castello di Cibottola. Its right bay preserves numerous relatively well-preserved frescoes. These include five depictions of saints with distinctly Byzantine features, as well as a Madonna and Child in the style of Giotto.

Cibottola–La Fontana Trekking Route

The Cibottola–La Fontana trekking route begins below the Castello di Cibottola. It follows the signs for the Sentieri del Perugino and is 11.3 kilometers long. The stated walking time is 4.5 hours. For planning your day, the length and walking time provide clear guidance: the route represents an extended hike and should be scheduled differently from a short walk around the historic buildings.

San Bartolomeo in the Forest

The Franciscan monastery of San Bartolomeo lies amid forests. Today, it is partially destroyed and uninhabited. According to tradition, Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Bonaventure of Bagnoregio and Blessed Giles of Assisi stayed there for varying lengths of time. The monastery is not open to visitors. Its structural condition and location amid the forests create a different accent from the art-historical details in San Fortunato.
