Caviola lies at the foot of the Cime d’Auta, a mountain group belonging to the Marmolada range. The village combines this mountain setting with hiking trails, sacred architecture and a history that continues to shape its present-day appearance.

Hiking trails and nearby peaks

Several hiking trails lead from Caviola to the Cime d’Auta. The Giro del Col di Frena offers a special way to explore the area: the route is designed as a loop, with both its starting point and destination in Caviola. It passes through coniferous forests and traditional Alpine architecture. This allows you to experience both the wooded mountain landscape and characteristic architectural features of the region on a single hike.

The peaks in the immediate surroundings of Caviola include Monte Tamer, Monte Alto, Cimon della Stia and Piz Croce.

Madonna della Salute and the history of the village

The Madonna della Salute church stands on the hill above Caviola. Today, it is considered a landmark of the village and remains a place of worship. From Via Marchiori, it can be reached by a short ascent along an unpaved road. The church was built from 1713 to 1715 on the initiative of the Regola of Caviola and Sapade (Sappade), and preserves richly decorated interiors.

The local administrative and settlement history is also essential to understanding Caviola. Historically, Caviola and Sappade had their own Regola, a local system of government administered by the heads of the families. Much of the village’s present-day appearance consists of rebuilding after the fire in which Caviola was almost completely burned down by German troops on 20 August 1944. The church and the rebuilt parts of the village therefore represent different layers of local history.

Regional culture and other activities

The wider region around Caviola is home to Latemar Art, a museum, and Chiesa parrocchiale, a church. For cyclists, the Falcade Bike Trail descends into the centre of Caviola. Another cultural highlight lies in Val Biois: Zinghenesta is a tradition passed down since the last century. Every year, it is presented during the festival and moves through the streets in a procession of traditional Dolomite masks.
