Zoldo Alto: Dolomites, winter sports and culture

Zoldo Alto combines striking Dolomite landscapes with winter sports, historic places and manageable trails through the Val di Goima. Between Pecol, Palafavera and the mountain areas around Monte Pelmo, you will find different focal points for an individually planned trip.

Landscape between the Val di Goima and Monte Pelmo

The Civetta–Cime San Sebastiano Natura 2000 site encompasses the entire area west of Zoldo Alto. It includes montane and subalpine spruce forests of Picea abies. The Monte Pelmo–Monteval, Formin area is characterised by Dolomite formations of outstanding landscape value; it also includes subalpine larch–Swiss stone pine woodland formations. The smaller Sorgenti del Civetta nature area is also part of Zoldo Alto.

Monte Pelmo lies in the surroundings of Zoldo Alto and northeast of the Maè Valley. Spiz de Zuel, Monte Punta and Schienal del Bec are also nearby. The Val di Goima belongs to the Zoldo Alto area; the Civetta wall rises northwest of the valley. The landscape character therefore extends from forest formations and nature areas to striking peaks and Dolomite walls.

Winter and outdoor activities in Pecol and Palafavera

In Pecol in Val di Zoldo, there are five kilometres of illuminated slopes for night skiing. These include the black “Foppe” run and the red “Cristelin” run. The Ski Civetta ski area also offers the “Giro della Grande Guerra 1915–1918” as an alternative ski route.

For cross-country skiing, Palafavera offers the “Pompeo Fattor” trail with moderately difficult circular routes of 5 and 7.5 kilometres, suitable for athletes and families. Palafavera is also home to Veneto’s only biathlon facility. The biathlon shooting range has 30 shooting lanes. An easy snowshoe route leads from Pecol to Baita Cristelin. The round trip takes 2 to 3 hours, reaches an altitude of 1,607 metres and has an elevation gain of 230 metres. In summer, the Civetta lift area is a destination for hikers and mountain bikers.

Culture, village history and short routes

In the Val di Goima in the Zoldo Alto area, the Museo degli usi, costumi e mestieri della valle di Goima is located in the former municipal school in Molin. An easy, one-hour circular route connects the old houses of Chiesa and Molin. Molin is also home to an old sawmill with a water mill, one of the last facilities in Zoldo to cease operations.

The parish church of San Tiziano in Chiesa di Goima dates back to 1400. It was recently renovated, has a typical onion-shaped bell tower and preserves valuable works of art. In the wider regional area around Zoldo Alto are the ancient site of Roggia dei Mulini, the Palazzo dei Rettori, the Museo Civico Belluno and the ruins of Resti del Castello Sant'Uberto.

The small lake Žarnadòi is also known as Lake Fertaze and is equipped with fire pits, tables and benches for picnics. When choosing accommodation in Zoldo Alto, you can therefore clearly weigh your priorities: winter sports in Pecol and Palafavera, trails and culture in the Val di Goima, or landscapes and nature areas around Monte Pelmo, Civetta and the nearby peaks.
