Those who discover Pian Molin-costa di Mezzo encounter the districts of Pian Molin and Costa di Mezzo in San Tomaso Agordino. Traditional Dolomite hay barns, known as “tabià”, as well as historic buildings have been preserved in both districts. Places of great natural interest and beautiful panoramas shape the landscape. The Mulino di Pian Molin is considered one of the most impressive buildings in the area.

Hiking between Stages and Summit Views

Stage 10 of the Cammino delle Dolomiti leads across Pian Molìn. From Costa di Mezzo, this stage crosses a bridge to Pecol; its old load-bearing wooden structure has been preserved. The trail to Piz Croce leads to a summit cross at an altitude of 1,627 metres and offers views of Civetta, Pelsa and Sasso Bianco.

Trails with Different Levels of Difficulty

The Catena dell’Auta alpine trail 623 runs from Pian Molin–Costoia to Forcella S’ciota and is classified as difficulty level E. From this viewpoint, Alleghe and its lake, Civetta and the Marmolada can be seen. Routes to Sasso Bianco

The circular Sasso Bianco route via Costa di Mezzo is listed as 9.2 kilometres, five hours of walking time excluding breaks and 758 metres of ascent. Its return route uses trail ST8 and descends via Piaia, Pecol, Costa de mez, Val and Mezzaval. The Rifugio Sasso Bianco is located at the end of the trail.

Another route from Celat to the Rifugio Sasso Bianco leads via Mezzavalle and Costa di Mezzo to Costoia, where the CAI trail to the hut begins. The Forcella trail from San Tomaso Agordino reaches the nearby municipality of Vallada Agordina.

High-Altitude Destinations around Pian Molin

The ascent to a bivouac takes approximately two hours and 45 minutes and reaches an altitude of around 1,844 metres. The trail from Piaia to a location situated at approximately 1,840 metres takes around two and a half hours. These two details provide additional time- and altitude-related reference points for planning your hiking days.

Celat: Astronomy, Zipline and Agriculture

In the district of Celat, the Centro Astronomico Provinciale “Emigranti” has an aluminium dome for up to 25 spectators. A projector depicts the movement of more than 2,400 celestial bodies. The Civetta zipline also leads to Celat, running in two sections from Canacede via Costoia. It consists of three pillars and two cables, has a total length of 1,600 metres and covers a difference in altitude of 260 metres.

On the first weekend of September, the Giornata dell’Orzo e delle Tradizioni Agricole takes place in the district of Celat. The festival is dedicated to traditional agriculture, crafts and local gastronomy. During the 2026 summer timetable, from 8 June to 9 September, Dolomiti Bus route 8 operates the Agordo Autostazione–San Tomaso–Pian Molin connection. This allows hiking trails, cultural events and a seasonal public transport connection to be considered together when planning your trip.
