Mountain village in the Boite Valley

Borca di Cadore is a mountain village in the Boite Valley in the province of Belluno. Depending on your travel interests, hiking trails, architecture, language or winter activities may take centre stage. In this way, the village combines different facets of life and travel in the Italian mountain region without being limited to a single experience.

Trails between forests, meadows and panoramic views

For hikers, the Rifugio Città di Fiume is a stage stop on the Alta Via delle Dolomiti No. 1. Trail No. 468 from Borca di Cadore/Serdes climbs gently westwards to the meadows around Taulà de Tiera at approximately 1,271 m. The route therefore provides a clearly described connection from the village to a higher-altitude meadow landscape.

At the Forcella Forada, trail No. 468, which comes from Tièra, connects with trail No. 480. At the same time, the Forcella Forada offers a very wide panorama. These two features make the spot interesting both for finding your way among different hiking connections and for looking out across the landscape.

The walk to the Cascata di Borca begins in Borca, crosses the bridge over the Boite and then continues along a forest track through a fir forest. There is an equipped picnic area at the Cascata di Borca. The route thus combines a specific natural landmark with a forest section and an opportunity to take a break.

Architecture and local culture

The Villaggio Eni in Borca di Cadore was designed by Edoardo Gellner and built between 1954 and 1962. The Villaggio Eni is home to the church of Nostra Signora del Cadore. Its exterior façades are made of raw concrete, complemented by a steeply pitched gable roof and a bell tower with a steel spire.

Ladin is still spoken in Borca di Cadore, specifically the Cadore variety. The language is rooted in the vernacular form of Latin and is considered a strong symbol of identity. A particularly vivid way to experience the local tradition is the Feast of Saint Anne, the patron saint of the village. It is celebrated every July with church services, music, folk games and traditional dishes such as polenta with pastin and apple fritters.

The parish church of Saints Simon and Thaddeus is also one of the village’s specific cultural sites. It houses a G. Callido organ dating from 1791. Another historical reference is the Lunga Via delle Dolomiti, which follows the route of the former Dolomite railway, where original railway stations, tunnels and bridges have been preserved.

Play area and winter activities

Happy Park offers an equipped play area with slides, swings, wooden elements and seesaws. It also includes a small pump track and cycling track for bicycles and mountain bikes.

Every winter, a 3 km cross-country skiing loop is prepared in Villanova; it begins just a few minutes from the village centre. In addition, a natural ice rink opens every winter, weather permitting. For your seasonal planning, both the prepared loop and the weather-dependent ice rink should therefore be considered as different winter options.
