Selva di Cadore: Culture, Trails and Winter Experiences

Selva di Cadore combines archaeological evidence, local Ladin history and trails through a diverse mountain landscape. Archaeology and Local History

The Museo Civico “Vittorino Cazzetta” displays the original skeleton of the Mondeval Man in a climate-controlled floor display case. An audio guide and special lighting explain the burial and its finds. The most important exhibits also include a complete Mesolithic burial with grave goods from Mondeval de Sora, as well as a cast of the surface of a boulder from Monte Pelmetto bearing dinosaur footprints. Throughout the year, you can attend educational workshops supervised by experienced specialists there.

Ladin Tradition and Sacred Art

The Unione dei Ladini di Selva supports the preservation of the local Ladin costume and the revival of traditional Ladin dances through the Gruppo Folk de i Ladign de Selva and its affiliated Gruppo Minifolk. Together with Toffol, the old hamlet of L’Andria has preserved its original form. Both belong to the Ladin settlement form known as the “Vila”, a village centre surrounded by fields and meadows.

An old document from 1234 mentions a church in Selva di Cadore dedicated to Saint Lawrence. The Chiesa di Santa Fosca features a 15th-century fresco of Saint Christopher on its main façade, as well as a painted image of Saint Fosca from the 17th century. A winged altarpiece from the late 15th century is housed in an altar retable dating from the mid-17th century; there is also an 18th-century tabernacle-shaped sacrament house.

Hiking Trails with Natural and Cultural Highlights

The hike to Forcella Forada begins at a car park at the third hairpin bend on Strada 251, on the route from Pescul towards Passo Staulanza. The trail runs through a sunny forest with rhododendrons and other rare flowers. At Forcella Forada, groups of chamois can be observed with the naked eye grazing among the rocks.

The trail to the archaeological site of Mondeval begins in Santa Fosca and continues via L’Andria and Toffol towards Malga Pien de Vacia. Along the path through the Vila di L’Andria, a restored and still functioning mill stands beside the Loschiesuoi stream. This brings together the landscape, settlement history and a specific archaeological destination in one outing.

Active Pursuits in Every Season

The Sentiero Rif. Città di Fiume – Malga Prendera route can be travelled on foot, with snowshoes or on a ski mountaineering tour. Casa delle Guide offers adults group hikes and multi-day trekking tours. The ascent to Passo Giau begins a few metres outside Selva di Cadore. For winter sports, the Ski Civetta ski area included here offers 80 kilometres of pistes and a cross-country skiing centre with four trails of varying difficulty.
