Baone Among Hills and Special Trails

Baone combines a varied landscape with historic sites and a strong local tradition. If you would like to combine peaceful walks with culture and nature observation, you will find several distinctive themes around the town. The hills around Baone offer peaceful, health-promoting walks in every season, in an environment featuring diverse landscapes and rock formations, beautiful flora and occasional encounters with local wildlife.

Hiking Among Rocks and Plants

On Sentiero del Monte Cecilia No. 8, the trail passes through a limestone meadow with yellow-flowering broom and the rare Ruta patavina. This plant species is endemic to northeastern Italy and the Balkan Peninsula. Latite, an extrusive rock composed mainly of feldspars, is also found on Monte Cecilia. Another striking formation is the Carega del Diavolo: the rocky passage resembles an imposing throne and lies near the ruins of the Santa Margherita monastery. In Parco delle Ginestre, you can observe the characteristic landscapes of the Euganean Hills. There is also a Percorso Vita with exercise equipment and benches.

Historic Traces and Religious Sites

Baone’s history can be explored especially along thematic trails and at individual buildings. From Sentiero del Monte Cecilia, a branch leads to the ruins of the medieval da Baone castle. Via degli Eremi, Ruderi e Castelli is a thematic trail connecting some of the park’s most important historic sites. This trail is recommended for visits year-round.

Individual sites also tell stories of different eras. A medieval predecessor of Villa Ca’ Barbaro bears the name Casa merlata dei Macaruffi and can be traced back at least to 1373. Villa Beatrice d’Este stands on Monte Gemola; Saint Beatrice I d’Este lived there from 1221 to 1226. Chiesetta della Madonna delle Ave developed from an earlier defensive structure, following a reported miraculous event, into a Marian shrine that attracted pilgrims for centuries.

Peas and a Fixed Date in the Annual Calendar

The production and trade of peas are part of the local identity. This also gave rise to the Festa dei Bisi: it was founded in 1999 on the initiative of the Pro Loco of Baone, with the support of the Municipality of Baone, and within a few years became the municipality’s most important event. The Festa dei Bisi takes place every year at the end of May. For your travel planning, this date is therefore a particularly clear point of reference if you would like to combine Baone’s regional food culture with a local festival.
