Casalserugo between the Middle Ages and Art

Casalserugo combines medieval architectural history, artistic themes and cultural venues. Chiesa di San Martino and Villa Ferri

The old Chiesa di San Martino is located in Ronchi del Volo, a district of Casalserugo, and was built in 874 by Bishop Rorio. It is one of the few churches to have survived the major destruction caused by Cangrande della Scala in 1325. For visitors interested in history, this site combines an early construction date with a specifically documented event from medieval history.

Villa Ferri is also known as Castel Ser Ugo. It is a fortified medieval residence from the 12th century associated with the Ser Ugo da Casale family. Inside, it features an extensive series of astrological frescoes. The site therefore appeals both to travellers interested in military architecture and family history and to those who appreciate the artistic details of historic interiors.

Hangar 9: Culture in a Former School Building

Hangar 9 was created by converting Casalserugo's former primary school and is considered a cultural centre for the dissemination and use of art in its various forms. For the 2025–2026 season, KREO Art Lab is offered there as a series of artistic workshops for adults. This is a different cultural experience from the medieval buildings: the focus here is on collaborative artistic work and a contemporary venue.

The name Hangar 9 recalls the first civilian airport built by Leonino da Zara, a citizen of Casalserugo. Hangar 9 was also intended to become the fourth location of the Art Factory Lab – La casa delle arti project. Both references give the cultural centre an additional connection between local history and artistic development.

Museums and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

Castello di San Pelagio is a castle in the area around Casalserugo. Also nearby are the Museo dell'Aria, the Museo Antoniano and the Museo al Santo; all three are museums. This allows you to combine the surrounding area with a variety of cultural interests when planning your trip, without having to focus on a single theme.

The wider regional area around Casalserugo also includes two destinations with clearly different landscapes: the Arco Vallaresso is a natural arch, while Monte Venda is a mountain.
