Pontelongo between the Bacchiglione and a sugar-making tradition
Pontelongo combines the history of the Bacchiglione with an unusually distinctive sugar-making tradition. Between bridges, mills, museums and historic buildings, you can discover a place whose character has developed from its river landscape, industrial history and regional culture. Pontelongo therefore offers different starting points for planning your trip: you can explore the town’s past, examine architectural traces or focus on the themes of sugar and waterways.
History by the River
The name Pontelongo is first documented in 1097. The relationship with the Bacchiglione is particularly evident at the historic stone bridge. It had three arches; the central arch was significantly higher and wider than the other two to allow boat traffic to pass through. On 17 September 1882, the historic bridge was destroyed by flooding of the Bacchiglione.
One of the notable buildings is the former Casa del Fascio, built in 1938. It is considered one of the rare examples of Futurist architecture in the architectural landscape of Veneto. The building was partially accessible for events; it also has a ramp providing easier access for people with limited mobility. Villa Foscarini Erizzo represents another historical dimension. It was probably built in the second half of the 16th century as a summer residence for the Venetian Foscarini da San Stae family.
The industrial past is also present in the townscape. The Pontelongo sugar factory was built on 26 June 1910 in a bend of the Bacchiglione. In 2006, the municipal administration declared Pontelongo the “Paese dello Zucchero”, meaning the “Sugar Town”. The Pontelongo mill can be traced back as being in operation since at least 1875. It was founded by Oreste Centanin, used steam power for production, and the river served as a transport route. From the left bank of the Bacchiglione, the mill continues to shape the town’s silhouette.
Sugar, Festivals and Local Themes
The sugar-making tradition is also reflected in the Festival della Dolcezza. It includes the last Sunday in November, the first Sunday in December and the patronal festival of Sant’Andrea, celebrated on 30 November. Over the years, activities related to Pontelongo’s sugar-making tradition have included train rides to the sugar factory, public demonstrations of sugar sculptures and workshops for young confectioners. These formats form part of the documented development of the theme and do not constitute a statement about a current events programme.
For those interested in exercise and spending time outdoors, there is the Area attrezzata Sport e Salute. It was designed for physical activity, outdoor recreation and general well-being. In this way, a sports-oriented place complements Pontelongo’s historical and cultural themes.
Museums, Art and San Geminiano
The GeSTA Museum, whose full name is Guerra e Saccisica Testimonianze Avvenimenti, opened in April 2014. In its first phase, it focuses on the First World War and the soldiers of the Saccisica area. The materials are presented predominantly in digital form. There are also display cases containing wartime objects, reproductions of documents about soldiers and historical uniforms.
Further cultural traces can be found in the Parco della Rimembranza, inaugurated in 1927, and on a façade of the G. Leopardi middle school. The mural there was created by Tony Gallo in 2020. In 2022, Mr Zatti donated the work “Dante pensante” to the municipal administration of Pontelongo.
The area of San Geminiano di Terranova includes the church of the same name. San Geminiano di Terranova is a district of Pontelongo; following the straightening of the river course in 1859, the church lies on the right bank. The two parts of the area around San Geminiano di Terranova are connected by a footbridge. This makes it possible to understand the historic local connections and the river’s history spatially as well.
Waterways and Trip Planning
A navigable route via Padua, Battaglia, Bovolenta and Pontelongo connects the Euganean Hills with the lagoon near Chioggia. This connection places Pontelongo within a broader landscape and waterway context. The documented places and themes thus enable trip planning that combines historical connections, the river landscape and regional tradition.
