Vescovana: Villa Pisani, Garden Art and Sacred History

Villa Pisani as the Centrepiece of the Village

For choosing where to stay, Villa Pisani Bolognesi Scalabrin is a clearly defined point of reference: it is associated with Vescovana at Via Roma 19/25 and is categorised as a Bed & Breakfast. The villa offers guided tours of the building and garden every day. This allows the visit to be explored not only through the grounds but also through the history of the estate.

The villa was built in the first half of the 16th century on the orders of Cardinal Francesco Pisani. It served as the administrative seat of the estates in the Bassa Padovana, which the family had acquired in 1478. The history of the villa extends from a medieval farmstead through a Renaissance palace to a 19th-century cultural salon. It was also one of 136 villas included in a tourism project in the Veneto region.

Historic Garden and Distinctive Architecture

The redesign of the historic garden began in 1852, when Evelina van Millingen came to Vescovana and began creating her garden with Crispin de Passe. The garden combines Victorian English taste with the tradition of the Italian garden and with elements reminiscent of Islamic gardens. A viewing terrace was created on the piano nobile of the villa, allowing the garden to be viewed from above.

The large formal garden contains centuries-old and monumental plants, including non-native species. The villa also includes an elongated main building with covered barchesse, a dovecote complex and a stable. The family chapel stands in the park and is considered an important example of Elizabethan Gothic Revival style. It was built in 1860 by the sculptor Antonio Gradenigo based on a design by Pietro Selvatico Estense. The Teatro dell’800 is also part of the park.

Churches, Chapels and Frescoes

The Church of San Giovanni Battista in Vescovana was built at the end of the 16th century to replace an earlier place of worship and was remodelled several times over the following centuries. It includes the Oratory of the Madonna di Loreto.

The Chapel of the S. Casa di Loreto is located next to the church. It contains frescoes by Jacopo Marieschi depicting a Madonna and Child, female saints and angels. In Vescovana, the Oratorio della Presentazione della Beata Vergine Maria is also assigned to the parish district of San Giovanni Battista. These sacred buildings complement the secular architecture of the villa with another historical focus.

Local Culture in Vescovana

A clearly dated insight into village life is the Festa dell’Oca, which took place as a village festival in Vescovana from 26 August to 2 September 2025. The programme included the Grande Gioco dell’Oca, a market and a charity raffle.
