Illustration Art and Cultural Experiences

Sarmede is a destination for you if illustration art, historic churches and trails with a history of their own are among your interests. Its cultural heritage ranges from international children’s book illustrations to traditions dating back to the Lombard period; at the same time, several trails cross landscapes with panoramic views and preserve traces of earlier uses.

The Casa della Fantasia in Sarmede is the focal point of its illustration art. This multifunctional center for illustration and books is also home to the Fondazione Štěpán Zavřel. Every year from November to February, the Casa della Fantasia hosts the new edition of the international illustration exhibition for children, “Le Immagini della Fantasia”. From March to September, it also presents the exhibition “Il Sole ritrovato. L’illustrazione del secondo ’900 a Sarmede”.

The 43rd edition of “Le Immagini della Fantasia” demonstrates how extensive this exhibition theme can be: It featured more than 200 original works. The exhibition was entitled “Natura e Visioni” and curated by Silvia Paccassoni. On request, the Fondazione Štěpán Zavřel offers Italian-language guided tours for school classes of all age groups, covering Sarmede’s murals and the Štěpán Zavřel Museum.

Churches and Historic Traces

The churches also give Sarmede and its hamlets a historical dimension. The Church of Sant’Antonio in Sarmede was built in the Baroque style at the beginning of the 19th century. At the Church of San Giorgio in Rugolo, the Lombards spread the cult of this Eastern martyr in the West. The first church was probably built during their rule in the 6th or 7th century.

Historic Trails and Hiking Destinations

The Sentiero Pagnoca is a historic educational trail approximately 4.6 kilometers long with around 560 meters of elevation gain. It retraces the route taken by the partisans from Montaner on their first ascent to Col Alt in Cansiglio on March 26, 1944. The Sentiero del Santo begins in Borgo Martin and follows a mule track lined with dry-stone walls that was formerly used to transport hay and wood down into the valley.

The Montaner–Cal De Zot–Le Scaffe hiking trail begins north of Montaner at an elevation of 330 meters and follows a path protected by dry-stone walls. For panoramic views, take the Strada del Patriarca: It leads to Monte Castelir, a viewpoint overlooking the Monte Cesen–Col Visentin mountain range, Monte Pizzoc, Montello and Castello di Cordignano.

At Col Olivier, the construction of an equipped recreational area is planned at a site in the Bosco del Cansiglio to enhance the area. This location is therefore part of the planned development and should not be equated with an existing facility.

Bus routes 301 and 302 connect Sarmede with Vittorio Veneto from Monday to Saturday. When choosing your hotel for a trip to Sarmede, you can therefore first determine your main area of interest: The Casa della Fantasia and the churches appeal to visitors interested in culture, while the Sentiero Pagnoca, Sentiero del Santo, Montaner–Cal De Zot–Le Scaffe and Strada del Patriarca offer different ways to explore historic trails and landscapes.
