Tovena between pass history and quiet cultural trails

Tovena combines historic routes, small cultural sites and a short hike to create a destination you can discover step by step. For centuries, the village was crossed by travellers, merchants and pilgrims journeying between the Dolomites and the lagoon. The history of the pass and places of remembrance

The Museo della Strada dei 100 Giorni is located in Tovena's Alpini lodge at Passo San Boldo. The small exhibition space is dedicated to the construction of the “Strada dei 100 Giorni” and the military events in the area during the First World War under Austro-Hungarian occupation. The Strada dei 100 Giorni from Tovena to Trichiana is 15 km long in total, providing a clear geographical framework for the historic connection across the pass.

Tovena's bell tower also tells of the importance of the passage. Over time, it served as an important landmark for travellers descending from Passo San Boldo or crossing the valley. A cultural and historical tour should also include the Museo di Arte Sacra. It is housed in an 18th-century building a few steps from the parish church. A 17th-century wooden crucifix is displayed there.

A short route to the Chiesetta di San Vigilio

The Chiesetta di San Vigilio lies beyond Tovena's village centre and before the bends and tunnels of Passo di San Boldo. It was built at the end of the 16th century. The small Santa Ottilia chapel is the starting point for the short hike there. North of Tovena, the CAI Sentiero Zanin trail begins behind the chapel and leads to the former, deconsecrated Chiesetta di San Vigilio.

The Chiesetta can be reached via a short mulattiera, preserved in its original condition and lined with dry-stone walls. A stone hermitage stands beside it. It served as sleeping quarters where hermit monks offered travellers and pilgrims accommodation and refreshments. It is precisely this combination of path, sacred building and traditional hospitality that makes the short detour an evocative part of the village's history.

Festivals and local cuisine

The local character includes the Secolare Fiera Franca held for Santi Simone e Giuda, which is recognised nationwide as a “Sagra di Qualità”. At Tovena in Festa, you can taste “trippa alla tovenese”, a traditional local dish.
