Cavallino between the lagoon, cycling paths and Venetian history

Cycling paths through varied landscapes

In the centre of Cavallino, Via del Casson begins at Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta. It runs along the canal of the same name and can be explored by bicycle or on foot. The piazza also connects to Via della Marinona via an approximately 400-metre-long section of cycle path over the lagoon water.

Another cycling connection is located on Via Pordelio. The elevated cycle path is called „La Via del Respiro“ and extends for 7 kilometres directly over the Venetian Lagoon, connecting Cavallino with Punta Sabbioni. Along Via della Marinona, cultivated fields, reed beds and lagoon salt marshes alternate with sea lavender. A tour therefore focuses not only on the paths, but also on a variety of landscapes.

Lock system and sacred art

The hydraulic locks Porte del Cavallino were built in 1632 to connect the Venetian Lagoon with the Piave River, now the Sile. The lock complex regulated the water level between the Casson Canal and the Sile, thereby enabling boats to pass through. At this site, hydraulic engineering and the landscape can therefore be viewed in close connection.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Elisabetta is part of the cultural history of Cavallino-Treporti. Its history dates back to the 18th century; traces of a religious building had already been documented in 1591. The church preserves important works of art, including an altarpiece attributed to Antonio Balestra.

Piazza, panoramic terrace and weekly market

Piazza Santa Maria Elisabetta has a panoramic terrace overlooking the lagoon. The weekly market takes place in Cavallino every Tuesday. Fresh produce, cheese, cold cuts, clothing and handicrafts are offered there. The market complements the historical and scenic impressions with an insight into local daily life.
