Fossò Between Churches and Early Traces

Fossò is a destination for travellers who wish to discover Italian culture through churches, frescoes and individual historical testimonies. The Antica Parrocchiale di San Bartolomeo del ‘700 in Fossò was consecrated on 8 September 1335. Its ceiling fresco, “La gloria di San Bartolomeo”, is attributed to Giambattista Canal by more recent art-historical research.

Another notable trace of the past is a bronze figurine from the 4th century BC found in Fossò. Diego Mazzetto discovered it and donated it to the Municipality of Fossò; today it is displayed in a glass case in the municipal library. The trifora of Ca’ Pisani is considered the only surviving element of Fossò’s former bishop’s palace. The Chiesetta della Beata Vergine del Rosario contains frescoes with votive depictions.

Sandon and the Art in San Giacomo

In Sandon, Villa Caffrè was built by the Caffrè family in the second half of the 17th century. Its current condition must be expressly taken into account: the villa is currently in a state of severe disrepair. The church of San Giacomo is also located in Sandon. It probably has Romanesque origins, while its existence is documented at the latest by the 13th century.

In the mid-18th century, San Giacomo was extensively enlarged and restored. On that occasion, the ceiling fresco depicting the apparition of Our Lady of the Pillar before the Apostle James was created. The main altarpiece is a work by Giovanni Battista Pellizzari (1598–1660) and depicts the apparition of the Madonna with the Child Jesus before the Apostle James. In the background, the walls of Verona and the Adige can be seen. This provides you with a precise view of sacred art, bringing together architectural history, painting and regional pictorial motifs.

Route Along the River Embankments

An independent perspective on Fossò is offered by the approximately 25 km route “Tra le Ville della Riviera e la Terra dei Tiepolo”. It runs along river embankments and passes through Fossò. There, it includes the 18th-century church, the rectory from the same period and the trifora of Ca’ Pisani.

The Villa Foscarini Rossi, a museum, is located in the immediate vicinity of Fossò.
