Historic Townscape and Local Traces

Avesa reveals its character in the streets of the historic borgo. Via Premuda, Via Gazzo, Via Indentro and Via Camaldola have largely preserved their architectural and landscape character. Traces of the everyday life of past generations have also been preserved. In Avesa, there are still several “lissiare”, rooms where laundry was boiled, as well as several surviving mills. Churches with Medieval and Early Modern History

San Martino Vescovo in Avesa was a collegiate church by 1225 at the latest. The original church stood at Molino Vecchio and was demolished during the major levelling of 1517; the present church was built on the same site.

In the garden of Villa del Bene Scopoli, a monumental elliptical water basin with a stone balustrade, water features and grottoes preserves a distinctive garden area. The combination of the basin, stone, water features and grottoes gives this place a clearly recognisable design structure.

The Latomìe del Monte Ongarine in Avesa are large tuff quarries of “pietra gallina”. Since antiquity, they have been carved out of the mountain through intensive extraction activity. The site thus represents a landscape whose form has also been shaped by the long use of tuff.
