Trevenzuolo: Churches, Villas and Rice Culture

Trevenzuolo reveals its distinctive character through the combination of rural landscapes, rice cultivation and historic architecture. The Strada del Riso Vialone Nano Veronese passes through Trevenzuolo and showcases Riso Vialone Nano Veronese as well as traditional dishes such as Risotto con il Tastasal and Risotto all’isolana. At the same time, it leads through a typical Risorgive landscape with abundant water and several wetlands. If you would like to combine regional cuisine with an understanding of a place’s wider landscape context, Trevenzuolo offers several concrete points of connection.

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena

The Parish Church of Trevenzuolo, “Santa Maria Maddalena”, was first mentioned as a pieve in 1145 and was under the authority of San Zeno Abbey. During work carried out in the early 1940s, the church was given a monumental neoclassical façade. Inside is a painting depicting the risen Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene; it was executed as a copy by Battista Amigazzi. Thus, a single building brings together a medieval reference, a design from the 20th century and religious painting.

Villas, Farmsteads and Oratories

Villa Allegri detta Corte Granda comprises barchesse, houses for farm workers, an oratory dedicated to Saint Anthony and large courtyards. These courtyards were used to dry grain, especially rice. A frescoed room dating from the second half of the 18th century is dedicated to local rice cultivation. The combination of agricultural use and representative architecture is particularly vivid here.

Corte Spolverini is a stately building from the 17th century in Trevenzuolo and is also known as Corte Sant’Eurosia. Corte Azzini is a 15th-century building at the crossing over the Demorta before Trevenzuolo when approaching from Verona. The complex of Villa Pellegrini detta Corte Chiara is divided into two parts by the Tione River. It includes an oratory dedicated to Saint Simon, whose architecture is dated to the mid-18th century.

Villa Curtoni Tretti detta Cortalta is located in Roncolevà, within the municipality of Trevenzuolo, near the border with the Province of Mantua. Its 140-metre-long southern front comprises the central manor house, two side barchesse and two terminal towers. Villa Giona Treves de’ Bonfigli detta Corte San Bernardino includes an oratory built in 1474 by Bartolomeo Antonio Formenti. The same villa contains a painting attributed to Francesco Benaglio or to an artist working in his circle.

Fagnano and Other Facets

The Parish Church of Fagnano, “Santo Nome di Maria Vergine”, preserves the historical date on an octagonal baptismal font from 1432. It also contains a late Gothic fresco of the Madonna and Child enthroned. The Arena Verde is a theatre in Trevenzuolo located in a historic private park. At the “Motori in Festa” event in Fagnano di Trevenzuolo, a car gathering for motoring enthusiasts was planned.

At Gamandone, too, the former use of water forms part of the area’s history: in the past, the water powered a mill and a pila there. The pila was built in 1649 by the Curtoni brothers. This means that different interests can be taken into account when choosing accommodation in Trevenzuolo – from churches and villas to rice culture, water landscapes and regional traditions.
