Between Frescoes, River Landscape and Local Cuisine

Bolzano Vicentino brings together several ways to experience culture and landscape: fresco art, river environments, historic villas, trails and a local fish specialty. In the town, you can explore religious art and local history as well as a stage of the Cammino Rigoni Stern or an accessible route for strollers and wheelchairs. This combination appeals to different travel interests without requiring you to focus on just one theme.

Ubaldo Oppi and Religious Heritage

The Pieve di Santa Maria represents a long local tradition: its origins are believed to date back to the 5th or 6th century. It preserves frescoes by Ubaldo Oppi, created in 1934–1935. The Chiesa Arcipretale di Santa Maria also preserves Ubaldo Oppi’s only fully intact fresco cycle.

The Galleria Municipale Ubaldo Oppi displays, in a permanent exhibition, the artist’s collections of preparatory drawings made in charcoal for his frescoes. Bolzano Vicentino is also home to the Museo diffuso d'arte religiosa “Ubaldo Oppi”, a decentralized museum of religious art. In the hamlet of Crosara, archaeological finds attest to a Roman presence near the Chiesetta dei SS. Fermo e Rustico.

Trails along the Tesina and Astico

The Cammino Rigoni Stern includes a 16.5-kilometre stage from Bolzano Vicentino to Breganze. It runs mainly along the banks or embankments of the Tesina and Astico rivers, as well as along municipal roads and trails.

The 5-kilometre route of the Marcia dei 4 Mulini covers a different scale. It is accessible to strollers and wheelchairs. The difference in length helps you assess the two routes for your personal planning without equating their respective trail characteristics.

Villas and River Landscape

The Tesina river crosses the municipality of Bolzano Vicentino from north to south and rises from a spring near the municipality of Bressanvido. Villa Chiericati Terreran is located in the landscape of Bolzano Vicentino, just a few steps from the Tesina river. Thus, landscape orientation and historic architecture meet along the Tesina.

Villa Valmarana Rossi was designed around 1563 by Palladio for Gianfrancesco Valmarana. The town’s development was also linked to a transport connection: a road crossed Bolzano Vicentino along its entire length and contributed to the development of a lively market, particularly with Vicenza.

A Specialty from Bolzano Vicentino

Avannotto di Bolzano Vicentino is a local fish specialty. The young fish are either fried in a pan or prepared at the age of 12 months, or when they reach a size of 10–15 centimetres, as “saor”, a sweet-and-sour marinade in the Venetian style.
