Cismon del Grappa amid Mountain Trails and History
Cismon del Grappa combines routes into the mountain world of Monte Grappa with churches, fortifications and places of remembrance. This allows you to explore the destination through both hikes and cultural history: several routes lead uphill from the town, while the old town hall houses a museum and religious heritage sites date back to the Middle Ages.
Hiking between Cismon and Monte Grappa
Sentiero 920 leads from Cismon del Grappa at 201 metres to Monte Grappa at 1,775 metres. These two elevations clearly illustrate the transition from the town to the mountain landscape. Sentiero 910 leads from Cismon via i Capitèi and a connection to Sentiero 920 to Col dei Prai, Forcelletto and Cima Grappa; its difficulty rating is E.
Sentiero 913 also begins in Cismon del Grappa and leads via Faghèr and a connection to Sentiero 920 to Forcelletto, where it joins Sentiero 910; its difficulty rating is T. Sentiero 929 leads from Cismon past the Finestron hydroelectric plant to Col della Berretta and the junction with Sentiero 920; it is rated EE.
A four-hour route leads from Capitello via Fagher and Malga Fiabernù to Forcelletto at 1,396 metres. The historic mule tracks around Cismon preserve their old stone paving and lead through the wild Gusella Gorge to Capitello. There, a slender rock pinnacle rises, regarded as a symbol of the town.
On the hiking trail near Cismon, you can see three early medieval stone structures resembling tombs, known in folk tradition as “i lebi delle streghe”. Cismon del Grappa is also associated with hiking maps showing distances of 6 km, 13 km and 15 km. The three distances help you compare different route lengths for your own planning.
Churches, Museum and Fortified History
The Museum of the Covolo di Butistone and the Great War is located in the old town hall of Cismon del Grappa and comprises three sections. The parish church of Cismon del Grappa was extensively restored around the middle of the 18th century. It preserves an ornate presbytery and a 16th-century bell tower.
Devotion to the Madonna del Pedancino in Cismon dates back to 1748 and is connected with a devastating flood on 18 August 1748. The Church of San Marco in Cismon, now Santa Maria e San Marco, has been documented since 1173. A chapel contains a wooden statue of the Madonna del Pedancino and a painting by Girolamo Da Ponte.
The military history also goes back a long way: Covolo del Butistone is an ancient military fortification documented since 1004. The Scale di Primolano fortification was restored and upgraded in 2017 after five years of work. It originally surrounded Castello della Scala, dated to 1260 and believed to have even older origins; the complex served to control the border between the Canale di Brenta, Valsugana and Feltrino.
The former Lancia factory is a remarkable example of mid-20th-century industrial architecture. Its design combines elements of early 20th-century tradition with the innovations of Rationalism. There is no other example from this period of architectural history in the Canale di Brenta; in the upper Vicentino area, the factory is a rare example. For those interested in climbing, Primolano in Cismon del Grappa is associated with a climbing area or rock face for climbing.
