Castelnuovo Cilento between the Alento Plain and the Via Silente

From the hilltop of Castelnuovo Cilento, the view extends across the entire Alento Plain, from Monte Stella to the sea near Ascea. This broad perspective gives the town a distinct landscape character: here, you see not only a historic town centre, but also the connection between hills, plain and coast in a single panorama.

Between the Coast, Mountains and Cycle Route

For cyclists, Castelnuovo Cilento is a notable starting point on the Via Silente. The approximately 600-kilometre circular cycle route runs along sections of coast and through the mountains of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. The route is divided into 15 stages and begins in Castelnuovo Cilento, a few kilometres from Vallo della Lucania–Castelnuovo railway station. This brings together the enjoyment of the landscape and a long-distance cycle route, without requiring you to commit to just one way of travelling.

A practical starting point for the route is located in Velina, a district of Castelnuovo Cilento. The Via Silente office is at Via Velina 102. There, cyclists can register for the route and collect the document La Silentina. This direct connection to the route makes Velina an important point for anyone preparing their cycling tour along the Via Silente.

Castles, Churches and the Historic Town Centre

Castello Talamo-Atenolfi stands in the upper part of Castelnuovo Cilento’s historic town centre. Through its gates, you reach an impressive staircase leading to the single-nave Church of Santa Maria Maddalena. The route thus connects the building with a sacred destination and makes the town’s historic structure immediately tangible.

The town’s ecclesiastical and historic character also includes the parish church of Santa Chiara and its adjoining monastery of the Friars Minor. It was built at the end of the 19th century by Marchese Talamo Atenolfi. The complex includes a private chapel belonging to the Marchesi Talamo Atenolfi, with memorial plaques bearing the names of family members. These places add another historical layer to the town centre, extending beyond individual façades.

Pebble Art in Several Locations

The pebble artworks of Guerino Galzerano form a distinctive thread through the townscape. They can be seen in several places in Castelnuovo Cilento: at his house, in the garden below the castle, in the Santa Caterina district and at his monumental grave in the cemetery. The art is thus spread across different parts of the town and can be included as a recurring motif when exploring Castelnuovo Cilento.

In the garden below the medieval tower of Castelnuovo Cilento, existing elements have been covered with stones. Guerino Galzerano also created new sculptures there, including chairs. The juxtaposition of existing garden elements and newly created forms makes this place a concrete example of the special connection between art and the built environment in Castelnuovo Cilento.

A Festive Date in the Annual Calendar

The festival in honour of Saint Maria Maddalena is celebrated in Castelnuovo Cilento on 22 July. Together with Castello Talamo-Atenolfi and the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, this date is one of the town’s clearly identifiable cultural references.
