Landscape Between Hills and Streams

Orria lies within the territory of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. A panoramic road runs across the hills above Orria and its hamlet of Piano Vetrale, offering views of the surrounding landscape. Along the streams in the area, you can expect clear water, white or strikingly striped rocks, ferns and wild-flowering plants.

Churches, Art and Heritage

The Santuario di Santa Domenica stands on the hill above Orria. In Piano, there is the Church of Santa Sofia, which tradition says was founded around 1453 by Dionisio Mazza, a refugee from Constantinople nicknamed “il Greco”. The bell tower of the Church of Santa Sofia is one of the highest in Cilento.

The Church of S. Elia Profeta in Vetrale was founded around the year 1000 by Basilian monks and was originally dedicated to San Biagio. It was only under the later administration of the Benedictines of the Badia di Cava that it was dedicated to S. Elia. In Orria, the Galleria Paolo de Matteis pays homage to the Baroque painter Paolo de Matteis (1662–1728), who came from Piano Vetrale, a hamlet of the municipality.

Pilgrimage and Art Throughout the Year

Tempa dell’Arenola became a pilgrimage destination for thousands of faithful in 1951, following apparitions of the Virgin Mary reported by many believers. Pennello D’Oro is an exhibition of figurative arts held annually in the last week of July, featuring painting, sculpture, photography, an on-site painting competition and murals. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from religious heritage to the visual arts.

The White Fig of Cilento, the “Dottato” variety or cultivar, is a typical fig variety grown in Orria. At Ficoscia – Festa del fico, the Fico Bianco del Cilento is used fresh, processed and as an ingredient in traditional dishes such as ravioli with ricotta and fig sauce. The olive oil produced in Orria is also considered to be of high quality. These products give Orria a distinct culinary identity.
