Raito between ceramics and coastal landscapes
Raito combines a strong maritime tradition with an unusually rich cultural history. The town is particularly interesting for you if, during your trip to Italy, you would like to combine historic sites, ceramic art and paths through a distinctive townscape. Villa Guariglia, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the paths towards Monte Avvocata give Raito different thematic focal points.
Villa Guariglia and ceramic culture
The Museo Provinciale della Ceramica is located within the Villa Guariglia complex in Raito. For 2026, it is important to note that the museum will be temporarily closed for maintenance from 1 January to 31 December 2026. If you are planning a stay during this period, this restriction is one of the key points to consider when planning your cultural activities.
The Torretta Belvedere was inaugurated on 9 May 1981 as the first part of the Museo Provinciale della Ceramica. Votive tiles and holy water stoups are exhibited in the “Giuseppe Prezzolini” Room. On the top floor, you will find ceramics from Vietri’s so-called German period, which covers approximately the years 1920 to 1947. The oldest votive panels associated with the Museo Provinciale della Ceramica date from the first half of the 17th century; such panels existed in Raito among other places at that time.
Santa Maria delle Grazie and historical traces
The founding of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Raito is connected with the discovery of a fresco depicting the nursing Virgin and Child. The original church was subsequently built between 1538 and 1540 and incorporated the fresco. The seamen’s chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie also contains paintings by Luca Giordano.
Villa Guariglia itself also takes you back to a clearly dated period in the town’s history: King Victor Emmanuel III stayed there from August 1944 to April 1945. The villa includes a library with more than 4,000 volumes. These historical connections make Raito a place where architecture, religious art and personal testimonies from different centuries meet within a compact area.
Stairways, terraces and paths
The townscape is shaped by a main road and numerous small stairways. They open up views of the alleyways as well as of natural and human-shaped landscape features. The terraces built with dry-stone walls were formerly used for small-scale cultivation. As you walk through Raito, you therefore encounter a landscape whose form was also shaped by its earlier cultivation.
Behind the church, a mule track leads to the hamlet of Dragonea and offers views of Vietri and the Gulf of Salerno. Several CAI-marked trails also start from Raito, including a trail to Monte Avvocata, where the sanctuary of the same name dedicated to the Virgin Mary stands. This allows historical impressions and travelling on foot to be brought together in one itinerary, without reducing Raito to a single attraction.
