Discover Tramonti: Trails, Churches and History
Accommodation in Tramonti
Trails connecting Tramonti
Tramonti can be discovered through trails, religious buildings and historical traces. The complete Sentiero delle 13 Chiese, measuring 15.2 km, is the main focus for hiking orientation. It can be started in any of the villages in Tramonti through which it passes. The CAI trail 310a is a variant of the Sentiero delle 13 Chiese. For your planning, this means that you can choose the starting point within the villages along the route and take the trail variant into account when navigating.
The Sentiero delle Formichelle
Another connection is provided by the Sentiero delle Formichelle. This old footpath connects Tramonti with the nearby coastal towns of Maiori and Minori. The history of the Formichelle reveals an impressive chapter in local working life: the Formichelle were women who carried freshly harvested lemons in baskets weighing around 55 kg on their heads to Maiori and Minori. The path thus also represents the connection between the inland area and the coastal towns.
Chapel and castle ruins
San Michele a Gete lies below a striking rock overhang in a narrow gorge. The chapel is located in a large rock cave and has a square floor plan with two naves. Architecture and landscape stand directly alongside each other here: the religious building cannot be separated from its natural surroundings, but is shaped by the rock formations of the gorge.
The ruins of the Castello di Santa Maria la Nova date from 1457 and were commissioned by the princes of Salerno at the time. The Castello had a rectangular floor plan and was fortified with 10 small towers and 7 square bastions. A cemetery is now located within its walls. For exploring the history of Tramonti, both the medieval fortification and its present-day use are therefore part of the site.
Churches and historic sites
In Pucara, the Conservatorio dei Santi Giuseppe e Teresa was founded between 1662 and 1676 to accommodate young noblewomen from Naples. In Campinola, the church of San Giovanni Battista preserves an altarpiece from 1608 by Ippolito Borghese. The Convento di San Francesco contains the church of the same name, which dates from the 15th century. Together, these sites offer insight into different forms of religious architecture, social history and sacred art.
Paterno Sant'Elia is also one of Tramonti's historically shaped sites. The Castrum Montalto was located there. The site adds another trace of the area's former fortification and settlement history to the castle ruins, churches and convents.
Nature and local flavors
The Giardino Segreto dell'Anima is a botanical-experimental garden. In Paterno Sant'Elia, Monte Trivento can be reached via a trail. These two destinations offer a different focus from the religious buildings and historic sites: here, plants, landscape and the path through the terrain take center stage.
The culinary side includes the wine-tasting tour at Agriturismo Mare e Monti. It includes a visit to the vineyards and cellar as well as a tasting of the property's own wines at lunch or dinner. This also allows your travel planning in Tramonti to be complemented by a gastronomic focus.
Choose accommodation to suit your interests
When choosing accommodation in Tramonti, your interests can determine the focus: trails and historic architecture lead to a different daily itinerary than the botanical-experimental garden, Monte Trivento or the wine-tasting tour. The destinations are spread across Tramonti, Gete, Pucara, Campinola and Paterno Sant'Elia. For an individual stay, it therefore makes sense to choose the location of your accommodation based on the destinations you would like to combine.
