Ancient and Medieval Traces
The Rocca Janula fortification was built in the 10th century as an observation and defensive structure for the abbey's territory. In the archaeological area of Casinum, a paved section of the town's Via Latina offers another tangible insight into the site's past. The fortification was therefore part of the protection of the abbey's territory, while the stretch of road preserves part of the ancient urban structure.

An epigraphic testimony attributes the construction of the amphitheatre of Casinum to the Cassinate matron Ummidia Quadratilla, who lived approximately from 28 to 107 AD. The Teatro Romano di Cassino is a typical example of a Hellenistic theatre. The amphitheatre and theatre thus represent two different types of ancient construction in the city.
The male statue known as the “hero or athlete of Cassino,” dating from the end of the Republican period, is housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale “G. Carettoni”. It depicts the figure in heroic nudity and a relaxed pose. The L'Historiale museum is located in the immediate vicinity of Cassino. Culture enthusiasts can therefore find both ancient architectural remains and a single figurative work here.
Pilgrimage Routes and Hiking Experiences
Cassino is the fourteenth and final stage of the Cammino di San Benedetto. At the same time, the Cammino di San Filippo Neri begins here and runs for over 120 km to Gaeta. This gives you two clearly different perspectives for planning your trip: one route ends in Cassino, while the other starts here. The distance of over 120 km refers to the route to Gaeta and is relevant when planning the entire journey. Those planning only part of the route should therefore understand the distance given as the length of the connection to Gaeta, not as the distance of a single section. According to the description, the paths of the Monumento Naturale di Montecassino are signposted and vary in difficulty. The paths used today follow old mule tracks and military roads from the Second World War. They include the well-known “Cavendish Road”.
