Coreno Ausonio: Hiking Trails, Monte Maio and History

Coreno Ausonio combines hiking landscapes, wartime history, architecture and local cuisine. The Sentieri Linea Gustav and Monte Maio trails lead to far-reaching horizons; historic sites, an ecomuseum and Perlato Royal Coreno limestone complement the experience of the landscape. This creates a destination where nature and culture can be explored without artificial separation.

Hiking between the sea and the mountains

The Sentieri Linea Gustav are hiking trails that connect historic routes with sea and mountain landscapes. From these trails, you can enjoy views of the western Aurunci Mountains, the Gulf of Gaeta, the Pontine Archipelago, the Liri Valley hinterland, and the mountains of Abruzzo and Molise. On the slope crossed by the Via Serra, you can observe quarries that were already being operated in Roman times. Hiking here therefore also means experiencing the landscape and its former uses together.

The hiking trail to Monte Maio begins at the public park in Coreno Ausonio, passes through the districts of Riccio and Costa Carosa, and climbs to the summit. At an altitude of 940 metres, Monte Maio offers a 360-degree viewpoint overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta, the Pontine Archipelago, the western Aurunci Mountains, the plains of Campania and the Abruzzo Mountains. This trail therefore combines a clearly described route with a wide-ranging panorama.

Sites commemorating the Gustav Line

A national flag on the summit of Monte Maio commemorates the capture of the summit by French troops on 13 May 1944 after the breakthrough of the main Gustav Line front. The Monumento per la Pace di Marinaranne was inaugurated on 15 May 1994 between Monte Faito and Monte Feuci, at the foot of Monte Maio on the road to Vallauria. Every year on the third Sunday in May, the Marcia della Pace takes place from the central square of Coreno Ausonio to Marinaranne; it includes guided visits along the Gustav Line trails.

Cave, tomb and historical evidence

Grotta delle Fate lies on Monte Schiavone, an unusual natural cave carved into the rock and worked with a chisel. Below its entrance are cultivated terraces with two wells. The Grotta delle Fate in Contrada Selva di Palma is a tomb carved into the rock around the 8th century BC. The entrance is currently blocked by large boulders, so the Grotta is inaccessible.

The Eco Royal Museum is a multifunctional ecomuseum that brings together place and art in a tour. The Church of Santa Margherita was built towards the end of the 14th century. Perlato Royal Coreno limestone was already used in Roman times, among other things, for the Via Appia, the Via Ercolanea, columns and streets in Pompeii, the amphitheatre of the Roman city of Minturnae, and the Abbey of Montecassino. In Coreno Ausonio, culture is therefore evident both in the buildings and in the stone used.

A traditional dish

Laina e fasuri is a traditional first course made from a dough of flour and water, served with beans, chickpeas or grass peas. This dish adds a culinary facet of the town to the hiking and cultural themes.
