Pontecorvo: Castle, Cathedral and River

Pontecorvo is best understood through its medieval character: the town’s medieval origins are associated with a castle built around 860 by the Lombard Rodoaldo near the bridge over the Liri. Its former keep, the Torre di Rodoaldo, now serves as the cathedral’s bell tower.

Surviving Traces in the Historic Centre

Around 300 metres of the medieval castle wall survive in the eastern part of the historic centre. One specific detail of this fortification history is the Porta Santo Stefano: the medieval gate retains an original solid-wood door leaf. The wall and the gate offer two different scales for exploring the history: a surviving section of the fortifications and a single original structural element.

Basilica and Museums

The Basilica di San Bartolomeo was built on the ruins of the castle in the 11th century. Its crypt houses the Museo della Cattedrale. The Museo delle Battaglie was founded in 2004 to preserve and communicate the history of Pontecorvo, its surrounding area and the Liri Valley during the Second World War. Pilgrimage and Local Customs

Religious traditions also take clear forms here. The San Giovanni Appare pilgrimage leads from the Chiesa di San Bartolomeo to the Santuario di Melfi and takes place on the second Sunday in May. During the procession of the patron saint’s festival, a ritual takes place at the spot known as “le peccata mea”, in which pilgrims throw a stone into the river.

Carnival and Regional Cuisine

Burlicchio is the official mask of the Carnevale Pontecorvese.

A culinary speciality is the Peperone di Pontecorvo. It is also known as Cornetto and is a typical product of Bassa Ciociaria with protected designation of origin DOP status. The peppers are harvested by hand in two harvesting periods from mid-July to the end of October: the early harvest begins in mid-July, while the late harvest starts in mid-August and continues until the end of October. In September, the Festa del Peperone DOP di Pontecorvo celebrates the Peperone harvest.
