Fortress, Museum and Sacred Sites

The Renaissance fortress of San Casto and Cassio was built in 1520 by Evangelista Carrara from Bergamo. The fortress consists of six cylindrical, polygonal, and square towers with battered walls. San Casto Castle can be reached via a walking trail on San Casto Hill; this trail forms part of many CAI hiking routes.

At the Museo della Media Valle del Liri, an exhibition route extends across three levels. The museum is housed in a former 14th-century monastery built on the foundations of a Roman villa. Educational panels, along with stone and ceramic materials, present the prehistory and early history of Sora and the Liri Valley. In this way, the museum brings together architectural history and the region’s early history.

The church and adjoining Benedictine monastery of San Domenico were traditionally said to have been founded in 1011, but more probably between 1021 and 1025. At San Domenico Abbey, the mortal remains of Saint Dominic are kept in the crypt beneath the altar. Since the mid-11th century, they have led to an intensive pilgrimage movement there. San Domenico therefore combines religious significance with a foundation history whose uncertainty has been deliberately preserved.

Santa Restituta also has several clearly datable features. The church has an authentic 13th-century portal and three bronze doors cast and designed in 1975 by Tommaso Gismondi from Anagni. Set into the façade is the privilege granted by Charles II of Anjou, drawn up on November 13, 1292. Not far from San Domenico Abbey are also the remains of Ponte Marmone, dating from the 2nd century BC.

In Sora’s historic center stands the building where Vittorio De Sica was born on July 7, 1901. Cenciarella adds a distinctive note to the local festival calendar: it is the traditional mask of Sora’s historic carnival and points to the town’s local origins of the celebration. The Marian month at Madonna delle Grazie ends with an impressive torchlight procession along the slopes of San Casto Hill, which faces Sora’s municipal area.

Hiking and Climbing

The “Vincenzo Tollis” rock face of CAI Sora is a sport climbing area on natural rock. Stage O02 of the Sentiero Italia begins near the center of Sora and has a one-way walking time of 6 hours and 45 minutes. The documented walking time helps distinguish between a walking trail and a considerably longer hike when planning.

Getting to Sora

The regional railway line from Roccasecca via Sora to Avezzano includes Sora as a scheduled stop. Thus, alongside the riverside paths, fortress, museum, and religious sites, the railway connection is another concrete reference point for a stay in Sora.
