Bracciano on Lake Bracciano – History, Nature and Lakeside Experiences

Bracciano is situated on a hill above the waters of the lake of the same name, Lake Bracciano.

Between the Lake and Nature

Bracciano lies within the Bracciano-Martignano Regional Nature Park. Visitors can use guided routes there for hiking and cycling. Another option for physical activity is the circular trail in the Bosco di San Celso. The woodland has equipped areas for children and fitness; at the same time, the entire woodland is closed to motor vehicles. When planning a visit, both active pursuits and time spent in a traffic-free woodland landscape can therefore take centre stage.

The lake itself also shapes the range of possible experiences. Swimming, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, dragon boating and diving are all possible on Lake Bracciano. The Motonave Sabazia II connects the three main towns on the lake on a route lasting approximately two hours.

On the lakeshore is the former English seaplane base at the foot of the road leading to the castle. The Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare is located on Lake Bracciano, on the historic site of the former seaplane base at Vigna di Valle. The site's historical significance makes it a destination in its own right for visitors interested in aviation and regional history.

Town Walls, Churches and Collections

Sections of Bracciano’s medieval town walls are still visible on Via Fioravanti. The Chiesa collegiata di Santo Stefano Protomartire offers another link to the town’s history: it became Bracciano’s parish church in 1427 and was granted the status of a collegiate church in 1591. Both years mark important stages in the development of this religious building.

Castello Odescalchi is pentagonal and has three outer rings of fortifications with five towers, one at each corner of the outer fortification. The complex also includes hanging gardens offering views of Lake Bracciano. Its architecture, fortifications and lakeside location can be experienced here directly as a cohesive whole.

The Museo civico di Bracciano is located approximately 450 metres, or a five-minute walk, from Bracciano railway station. It houses a historical-artistic collection and an archaeological collection.

The remaining visible sections of Bracciano’s historic aqueduct include the so-called Archi di Boccalupo in the countryside between Bracciano and Manziana. A hammer dating from the 18th century has also been preserved in a building that once housed an ironworks. Both features broaden the view beyond the well-known buildings to include technical and economic evidence from the surrounding area.

Traditions and Travel Planning

The town’s cultural life is also reflected in recurring events. The annual Passione di Cristo is a theatrical performance with a procession through the Borgo and has been held there for almost 40 years. The annual Infiorata Corpus Domini has taken place in Bracciano since 1983 and showcases the skills of the local Maestri Fiorai.
