San Giorgio: Building history and architecture

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio is considered Orio al Serio’s principal work. It was built in 1714 and extended by two aisles in 1890.

The Chiesa di San Giorgio consists of a single rectangular nave. Pilasters divide it into four bays; these support a cornice above which a barrel vault begins. Six chapels complement the interior, three on each side of the nave, each opening onto the nave with an arch. The striking polygonal façade stands out on the exterior: a broad cornice divides it into two orders, while pilasters separate three sections.

Museum and medieval tower

The historical museum in the Torre Civica was inaugurated on 1 October 2005. Another historical trace leads to the Torre medievale in Orio al Serio. The medieval tower was originally very probably part of a defensive fort, which was presumably incorporated into the outermost ring of walls defending the city of Bergamo. Still-visible archer positions bear witness to this function.

At the Torre medievale, it is possible to climb up to the belvedere. The tower is opened in connection with certain civic or religious festivals. The Torre medievale is therefore one of the places where historic substance and access restricted to certain times should be considered together.

Park, circular route and paths at the airport

The Parco comunale is accessible via several entrances. There is play equipment for children, and the park also has a skateboard area. It is used especially in summer for festivals organised by local associations. The park also has a bar that is freely accessible to park users.

The cycling and pedestrian circular route around the airport grounds has a 1,800-metre-long north-eastern section and is connected to the Parco del Serio cycle path. North of the airport there is also a new hill from which arriving aircraft can be observed. An experimental cycle path by Italcementi is likewise located north of the airport. Along this route, visitors can pass through upgraded areas.
