Culture between the Castle and Churches

From a visitor’s perspective, Moniga del Garda brings together several different themes: churches and fortified architecture, a route with varying surfaces, rural landscapes, forests in the wider area around the lake and Porto Moniga beach. If you organize your stay according to your interests, you can distinguish between culture, exercise and time by the water.

Castello di Moniga is one of the fortified sites that arose in the hills around Lake Garda in the 10th century. In terms of layout and masonry, it is one of the best-preserved. Its crenellated wall has four small cylindrical watchtowers at the corners.

Chiesa di San Martino is located opposite the entrance to Castello di Moniga. The parish church was probably built in the 18th century on the foundations of an earlier chapel.

Chiesa della Madonna della Neve is a single-nave church with a gabled façade and the youngest of the Romanesque churches in Valtenesi. It probably dates from the second half of the 16th century.

The two churches complement the fortification with different sacred architectural forms and periods of construction.

The Castello di Padenghe castle and the Museo Civico Archeologico della Valtenesi are also located in the area around Moniga del Garda. Both add to the cultural perspective on the area around the town.

Route and Landscape

The Moniga Route begins and ends at Piazza S. Martino. It is 17 km long, takes 1.5 hours and has a medium difficulty level. Of this, 20% runs along unpaved paths and 80% along paved roads.

The route from Moniga del Garda to Soiano del Lago also shows the transition between paved and rural sections. After 1.44 km, the road becomes unpaved; the route then continues through a rural setting with meadows, rows of vines and olive groves.

In the forests farther from the lake in the Moniga del Garda area, downy oaks, hornbeams, linden trees, maples and hazelnuts can be found. Thus, the landscape extends beyond the built-up areas and those close to the beach.

Spiaggia Porto Moniga and Getting There

At Spiaggia Porto Moniga, there are paid and free parking spaces nearby, as well as toilets and showers. These practical facilities are useful to keep in mind when including the beach area in your daily plans.

From Salò or Desenzano del Garda, you can reach Moniga del Garda via Strada Statale 572. Moniga del Garda can also be reached by bus. This means that both a road connection and a public transport option are available for your journey.
