Gussago: Art, History and Trails

Gussago can be explored through several distinct features: a Way of the Cross, historic churches and buildings, trails through the landscape and local history, as well as seasonal culinary experiences. Art and Historic Sites

The Sentiero delle Croci is a Way of the Cross created in 2002 by artists from Gussago. A separate work of art was created for each of its stations. La Santissima, a former Dominican complex on a hill above Gussago, adds a historic accent. The complex preserves the Neo-Gothic forms that Rodolfo Vantini gave it at the beginning of the 20th century.

Villa Togni già Averoldi also turns attention to designed architecture and garden art. Its Italian garden is enclosed by hornbeam hedges and laid out with gravel paths around a central axis. The Casa della Begia in Gussago complements this picture as a rural manor house from the 14th or 15th century.

The Pieve di Santa Maria Vecchia is the oldest building in Gussago. It houses the Pulpito di Maviorano, a Lombard sculptural work from the 8th or 9th century. In Ronco, the Chiesa di San Zenone displays two paintings from the school of Vincenzo Foppa, as well as a Way of the Cross by the 19th-century painter Amanzia Guerrillot. In Gussago, you will therefore encounter sacred spaces with different artistic and architectural-historical connections.

Trails through the Landscape and Local History

The Itinerario valle Gandine leads to a rocky area with numerous karst features. For a shorter loop, there is the Parco della Santissima: the circular trail is 3 kilometres long, runs on Colle Barbisone and includes 16 stations of a fitness trail. The Antica Strada Romana is a 3.5-kilometre route along an ancient Roman track from the parish church in Ronco to Casaglio.

The centre is also part of the documented routes: the Ciclovia della Cultura passes through Gussago via Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Depending on your interests, you can therefore make a landscape trail, a historically oriented route or a route through the town the focus of your plans, without losing sight of the cultural destinations.

Regional Specialities

One seasonal highlight is “Lo Spiedo Scoppiettando”. From September to December, the local trattorias and restaurants offer the original recipe for Spiedo from Gussago. At “Tre generazioni di grappe in Franciacorta”, the experience includes a guided tasting with Sbrisolona and chocolate. Alongside churches, villas and trails, these two offerings add a culinary accent to your trip.
