Vaiano Cremasco: Villa, Church and Traces of Prehistory
History in tangible traces
Vaiano Cremasco is considered one of the oldest prehistoric settlements in Lombardy. A small stone vessel and a bronze spear were found in the Vaiano Cremasco area; the spear probably dates from a significantly later period. Remains of pile dwellings were also discovered during excavation work on the Canale Vacchelli. Those interested in early settlement history and archaeological traces will therefore find several tangible points of interest here.
Villa, Garden and Church
The Villa Vimercati Sanseverino is located in the village area known as “Vaianello”. It was formerly a fortification belonging to the noble Benzoni family and was probably built towards the end of the 16th century or during the first half of the 17th century. Four corner towers that project slightly from the walls characterize the building. In the western section, the villa includes an Italian garden whose hedges form spirals and mazes. The complex thus combines historic architecture with striking garden design, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single cultural experience.
The year 1566 links the Chiesa dei Santi Cornelio e Cipriano with a parish in the Diocese of Piacenza. Between 1687 and 1710, the church was completely rebuilt, and it was consecrated on May 10, 1717. One of the side altars features Titian’s painting “Incoronazione di spine”. For a stay shaped by cultural history, this church offers both a clearly datable construction background and an important work of art.
Il Moso and the Canale Vacchelli
Il Moso was formerly the largest marshland in the Cremasco area. Its drainage began in 1890 with the construction of the Canale Marzano and was completed only with the opening of the Canale Vacchelli. Today, the importance of the area can also be seen in its biodiversity: Il Moso provides a habitat for many animal and plant species that have become rare in the surrounding area. A provincial cycle path along the Canale Vacchelli facilitates access to and use of the Parco Agricolo del Moso. The landscape is therefore just as much a part of travel planning as the historic buildings.
Family Time and Local Culture
The Piscina Comunale has a 25-meter-long swimming pool with a water depth of 1.20 to 2 meters. There is a separate pool for children, as well as a play area with slides, whirlpools and water games. The Pro Loco Vaiano Cremasco also supports the development of initiatives such as exhibitions, courses of various kinds, excursions, cultural initiatives, festivals, fairs and other events. The Centro Culturale e Biblioteca Don Lorenzo Milani is a meeting place for cultural productions from around the world.
