Culture and Local History in Ornago

Ornago combines sacred art, local history and experiences in nature. The Cappella Verri is the final resting place of Pietro Verri and members of his family. Frescoes by Francesco Corneliani adorn the chapel, including “The Return of the Prodigal Son”. For a trip that combines culture and nature, these two distinct themes provide a clear starting point.

The history of the Chiesa di Sant'Agata dates back to before the 16th century. In 1908, it was consecrated by Blessed Cardinal Carlo Ferrari. Its interior has three naves separated by columns, as well as numerous frescoes depicting episodes from the lives of the saints. This religious building thus combines a long historical depth with vivid visual decoration.

Local history also includes Villa Carlotta. It is part of the Cascina Borella complex west of Ornago and has three above-ground floors. The Cappella dell'Addolorata was built as a cemetery in 1777. Later, the building protected a mass grave, dug outside the church and the town, from the elements. The Ornago sanatorium opened in 1910 to treat tuberculosis and was abandoned in the 1970s. The Chiesa del Sanatorio was built in the early 1920s in the Neo-Romanesque style.

Forest, Wetland and Trails

The Boscone di Ornago is a rare 12-hectare lowland oak woodland in the heart of Parco P.A.N.E. and a habitat of high ecological and landscape value. The Boscone includes a wetland that is connected directly to the Boscone's main trail by a more clearly defined path. Its entrance is on Via Roncello in Ornago. The woodland complex known as “ex sanatorio di Ornago” was managed as part of an agreement to enhance the natural value of the coniferous forest; today, it is available to PLIS P.A.N.E.

The trails also open up different landscape connections. The Cammino di Sant'Agostino leads west from Ornago, first into Parco del Rio Vallone and then into Parco del Molgora. The mountain-bike route “In MTB nei parchi della Brianza” runs from Gessate metro station through Parco del Rio Vallone to Ornago. For planning purposes, the routes are easy to distinguish: the Cammino starts in Ornago and heads toward two parks, while the mountain-bike route leads to Ornago from the direction of Gessate.

Guidance for Different Interests

The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Lazzaretto is accessible to people with disabilities. Two festivals are held at the Santuario: on the second Sunday after Easter and on the second Sunday in October. The Anfiteatro di Via Carlo Porta is an outdoor venue accessible to everyone. Ornago therefore offers both a religious site with celebrations firmly rooted in the annual calendar and a freely accessible open-air space.
