Bianzone Among Frescoes, Wine and Trails

Bianzone combines sacred art, the history of winegrowing and trails through a terraced landscape. The Via del Vino leads through the terraced wine landscape of Bianzone’s Costiera. A large part of the interior of the parish church of San Siro is decorated with frescoes by Cipriano Valorsa.

Art, Churches and Traces of the Past

Bianzone has seven churches, including the churches in its districts. Sacred depictions are not limited to church interiors: frescoes can be found on various house façades, while wayside shrines stand along the roads to the meadows and fields. The district churches and the wayside shrines along the roads to the meadows and fields expand the spatial setting of sacred art.

The Ecomuseo delle Terrazze Retiche has preserved and promoted Bianzone’s historical, cultural and landscape heritage since 2008. Another trace leads to the Statua stele di Bianzone: it was found in 2021 in the premises of Bianzone Town Hall and preserves traces of a prehistoric decoration carved into stone 5,000 years ago.

Winegrowing, Museum and Local Tradition

Tenuta La Gatta is housed in a restored 16th-century Dominican monastery and is surrounded by 13 hectares of nature. It includes an old wine cellar, vineyards, an open-air salon and a historic residence in a Valtellina winery. The monastery, cellar, vineyards and residence therefore belong to an estate whose individual elements provide a tangible setting for winegrowing in Bianzone.

The Wine Museum originated from the school project “A spasso nelle vigne”. The project introduced children to winegrowing and winemaking and involved families in recovering old equipment. As a result, alongside the terraced wine landscape, the history of winemaking is also among the subjects that have a tangible place in Bianzone.

In Piazzeda, the Sagra di Sant’Anna continues to be celebrated in the second half of July. The celebration includes a liturgical service in the small church and a day featuring typical local dishes. The feast day combines the religious occasion with local cuisine without losing sight of the character of the small church.

Circular Trails, Cycling and Walking Paths

The Col d’Anzana terra di confine is a circular hiking trail starting and ending in Bratta. On a hike along the Col d’Anzana, Bratta remains the fixed reference point for both the beginning and the end. The circular trail Tappe dello Spirito can also be cycled. This adds a specific cycling option on the same route alongside hiking.

The Sentiero Valtellina is a cycling and walking path from Sondrio to Tirano and passes through Bianzone. The route is thus designed to connect Sondrio and Tirano, while the Col d’Anzana and the Tappe dello Spirito are laid out as circular trails. For day planning, this provides a fixed starting and ending point as well as a connection between two cities as different route formats.

Paragliding is also practiced in the high-altitude location of Nemina Bassa in Bianzone. This activity therefore represents another specific area of the locality, separate from the ground-based circular and long-distance trails.
