Castione Andevenno among vineyards, history and mountain trails

The terraced wine-growing landscape of Sassella in Castione Andevenno is considered one of the most characteristic landscapes of Valtellina. For planning your trip, the area thus provides access to winemaking, cultural history and activities between the river and the mountains.

Winemaking as landscape and trail

The historic trail crap de la penaja connects the higher districts of Castione Andevenno with the agricultural areas on the valley floor. Archaeological traces in the districts

The Masso Altare lies at an altitude of 775 metres and is designated along the route as an important archaeological site. In the village of Ganda, near an old farmhouse, there are rock carvings considered significant; a separate information sign explains them. Together, the two sites complement the landscape’s character with archaeological evidence in different parts of the municipality.

Architecture and sacred art

Villa Parravicini was built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries as the residence of the noble Parravicini family and is an important example of Valtellina’s noble residential architecture. The villa is visible from the outside. Interior visits must be arranged with the owners. The Church of the Nativity of Mary in Balzarro is one of the oldest churches in the area. It was built in the Middle Ages next to the monastery of the Humiliati. Inside, there is an altarpiece from 1614 depicting the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The church also contains a finely crafted white marble bas-relief of the Madonna and Child.

River, climbing wall and mountain summits

Several different options are available for active days. The stretch of the Adda River between Stazzona and Castione Andevenno is suitable for rafting, canoeing and hydrospeed. In the village of Sassella, there is an equipped climbing wall with various routes for beginners and experienced climbers. The climbing facility is managed by the Sondrio section of the CAI. River sports and climbing therefore form separate activity areas, each with its own landscape and form of movement.

A challenging trail with impressive views leads through old, partly sparsely populated districts, alpine summer settlements and mountain pastures to the summit of Monte Rolla at an altitude of 2,277 metres. If you would like to combine mountain landscapes with a clear destination, this trail offers a distinctly different focus from the activities along the Adda or in Sassella. Old districts, alpine summer settlements and mountain pastures accompany the route all the way to the summit.
