Falerone reveals itself through several layers. The historic center, Piane di Falerone and the wider surrounding region offer different points of interest for a stay: archaeology, church art, historic buildings, mountains and long-standing local traditions.

Archaeology between the town center and Piane di Falerone

The Parco Archeologico di Falerio Picenus is located in Piane di Falerone, about 2 km east of Falerone’s historic center. Its Roman theater continues to be used for performances during the summer season. In the historic center, the Museo Archeologico Pompilio Bonvicini di Falerone is housed in the former San Francesco monastery. It preserves archaeological evidence from the Falerone area dating from the Picenian period to the Middle Ages. One section of the museum is divided into two parts: one focuses on finds from necropolises, while the other addresses aspects of everyday life, including finds from excavation campaigns in the archaeological park. When planning a summer visit, the theater is therefore not only a Roman structure but also a performance venue in the archaeological park; it is located separately from the museum in the town center, in Piane di Falerone.

Churches and works of art in Falerone

The Chiesa di San Fortunato was renamed from Chiesa di Santa Maria to San Fortunato in 1352, after the Franciscans moved inside the city walls. The residents of Falerone still refer to it as San Francesco. The church houses Vittore Crivelli’s painting “Madonna Adorante il Bambino, e due Angeli,” dating from 1479. The former Chiesa di S. Sebastiano houses a small art gallery featuring the work “Stimmate di San Francesco e San Michele Arcangelo” by Frà Marino Angeli from the 15th century.

Historic buildings in the surrounding region

Around Falerone, the Palazzo comunale is one of the palaces, the Museo civico archeologico one of the museums, and the Rocca di Urbisaglia one of the fortresses. In the wider surrounding region, the Castello della Rancia adds a castle to this historic landscape. The Loggette dei Mercanti are a two-story portico dating from the 15th century that once received pilgrims. With their two-story portico, the Loggette dei Mercanti represent a distinct architectural type in the region’s architectural history.

Mountains and a connected hiking trail

The mountains in the wider surrounding region of Falerone include Colle Castelletto, Monte la Torre, Monte Petrella and Monte dell’Ascensione. For day-trip planning, these destinations are located in the wider surrounding region, while the “Fermo Rebirth - Secondo anello” trail is connected to the Chiesa di San Fortunato in Falerone.

Lu serpe: a traditional Christmas pastry

Lu serpe is a traditional Christmas pastry. The Poor Clares have been preparing it since the 17th century. For annual planning, the Christmas pastry and theater performances fall at different times: Lu serpe is prepared at Christmas, while performances in the Roman theater take place during the summer season.
