Monte Urano combines a distinctive historic centre with a shoemaking tradition dating back to the 19th century, seasonal festivals and a riverside landscape on the edge of town. Castle, Gates and Towers
The Castello of Monte Urano has a triangular layout. Three small squares are connected by six narrow lanes. For orientation on site, Piazza della Libertà is a useful reference point: from there, the Castello can be reached via a paved road.
The Torre dell'Orologio is also known as Porta Nova, was built in the 18th century and connects Piazza della Libertà with the ancient Castello. Inside, it preserves an original clock mechanism from the late 19th century that is still in working order; visitors can view the gears. Porta del Sole is the only surviving original gate of the medieval castle, and people still pass beneath its arch today. The Torre Civica is also known as Torrione, dates from the 13th or 14th century and was converted from a military structure into the bell tower of the former Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo.
Churches with Different Architectural Forms
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo has a Latin-cross layout, three naves and a dome set on an octagonal drum.
The Chiesa di San Rocco was built at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1583, the Compagnia della Pietà was established there; it was also known as the Compagnia del Gonfalone. Its furnishings include a recently restored altar with marbling, carved details and gilded woodwork.
The small Chiesa di Santa Maria Apparente probably dates from the 14th or 15th century. From 13 May to 9 November 1999, restoration and renovation work was carried out on its roof and exterior wall. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, by contrast, is a rectangular neoclassical building with a single nave.
Shoes, Markets and Local Festivals
The shoemaking tradition in Monte Urano can be traced back to the first decades of the 19th century. Shoemaker's workshops already existed there in 1808; by 1815, the craft was widespread among numerous artisans. The workshops produce so-called „chiochiere“: flat slippers made of smooth or woven leather, with a fabric lining and no heel.
The Mercatino della calzatura e dell’artigianato organises summer evenings featuring shoe shopping, music, leisure activities and gastronomic offerings. The 48th Carnevale Monturanese includes a parade of floats and masked groups through the town centre. The Festa di San Michele Arcangelo is a patronal festival in honour of Saint Michael, which took place from 7 to 17 May 2026. At the Sagra dei Vincisgrassi, handmade baked pasta is prepared in the traditional way and baked in a wood-fired oven.
By the Tenna River
The Parco Fluviale Alex Langer is located on the left bank of the Tenna River on the outskirts of Monte Urano. Its path follows the course of the Ete Vivo and passes through areas with old trees, native plants and local wildlife. The riverside landscape therefore complements the narrow lanes, churches and towers with a distinctly different setting.
