Nurallao: Archaeology, Forest and Local Cuisine
Accommodation in Nurallao
Nurallao appeals to travelers who want to combine cultural history, landscapes and local cuisine in a thematically diverse stay. Archaeological evidence, a forested area with a waterfall and a traditional dish offer different ways to experience the town and its surroundings. The chronological range extends from Nuragic and Roman traces to the memory of an earlier workers’ tradition.
Forest, Water and a Marked Trail
Funtana is Arinus is a wooded park in the hills of the historic region of Sarcidano. The area is located a few kilometers from the center of Nurallao and is characterized by oaks, holm oaks and Mediterranean maquis. Thus, it is not only the water that takes center stage here, but also the landscape through which it flows.
In Funtana is Arinus, a marked forest trail leads to the main waterfall and smaller cascades. There, the Rio Sarcidano forms the 20-meter-high Su Craddaxioleddu waterfall. For nature enthusiasts, this creates a specific attraction in which the forest trail, stream, waterfall and smaller cascades belong together.
The Giant’s Tomb of Aiodda
The megalithic Giant’s Tomb of Aiodda is located in the area surrounding Nurallao. It was excavated archaeologically in 1979 and stands out for its distinctive upside-down boat shape. The tomb dates back to the 15th century BC and gives the cultural history around Nurallao a clear connection reaching far back in time.
Roman and Nuragic Traces
The Roman remains of Sa Bidda Becia include the remains of houses, roads and wells belonging to a village. The Nuragic spring sanctuary temple of Nieddìu is located in a wooded area. The two sites represent different historical themes: one concerns the structural remains of a village, while the other concerns a temple in a forested setting.
The SAN – Spazio Archeologico Nurallao preserves finds from Roman burials that were excavated in 2000 in the Aravoras area of the town. In addition, the baths of Cannedu date from the 1st to the 3rd century AD. These examples lead from archaeological finds to structural remains and reveal several facets of the Roman past.
Workers’ Tradition and Industrial Archaeology
The lime kilns of Nurallao preserve the memory of an earlier workers’ tradition. Funtan’e Susu is an industrial archaeology site associated with the disused quarries of Niachili. Together with the older tombs, temples and Roman remains, this theme broadens the view of Nurallao to include the history of work and raw-material extraction.
Is tallarinus: Local Cuisine with Saffron
One of Nurallao’s culinary specialties is Is tallarinus. To prepare this traditional dish, thin, handmade spaghetti is cooked in meat broth and then baked in the oven with cheese and saffron.
