Bithia and the Tower of Chia
Bithia was a thriving port centre, first Phoenician, then Punic and finally Roman. Bithia was inhabited from the 8th–7th century BC until the 6th century AD. At Bithia, the outlines of the city wall and individual houses are visible. If you enjoy exploring historical sites through tangible architectural traces, you can observe both the long history of settlement and the preserved floor plans there.
The Tower of Chia was built from 1578 onwards to defend the mouth of the Rio Chia. Since 1 August 2026, the Tower of Chia has been open to the public every day. You can reach the tower via a comfortable walk of about ten minutes. This allows you to combine a historical visit with a manageable walk.
Beaches and Coastal Paths
Sa Colonia is a large beach with soft, white-to-amber sand, crystal-clear emerald-green water and a seabed that slopes gently towards the open sea. You can reach Sa Colonia on foot via a path that crosses the headland, crowned by a tower and covered with Mediterranean maquis. At its foot lie the ruins of the Phoenician city of Bithia, dating from the 8th century BC.
Cala del Morto can be reached via a short footpath from the car park at the adjacent Porto Campana. This access route differs significantly from the approximately ten-minute walk to the Tower of Chia and offers you another opportunity to include the destinations around Chia in your plans as walks.
Spartivento Lagoon and Wildlife Observation
The Spartivento Lagoon lies behind Su Giudeu Beach. At the lagoon, you can observe and photograph pink flamingos, herons and coots. For visitors interested in nature, this provides another specific focus for observation alongside time by the sea. Especially if you enjoy travelling with a camera or binoculars, you will find a subject here that differs from the historical traces and the beach landscape.
Practical Information at Su Portu
You can reach Su Portu via the panoramic Road 195 by following the signs to Torre di Chia. There are car parks, places to eat, a campsite and beach equipment rental facilities in the area around Su Portu. If you are planning a stay with independently planned days at the beach, these specific points provide useful orientation on site.
