Domus De Maria between History and Coast
Domus De Maria opens up a journey where archaeological history, seascapes and wooded mountain areas come together to suit different travel interests. The archaeological site of Bithia lies above and at the foot of the promontory of Torre di Chia; the settlement was founded around 720 BC. This combination makes the area interesting for travellers who want to experience culture, nature and time by the sea with different focuses.

The sacred Tofet of Bithia is part of the historical experience. It was established on the islet of Su Cardolinu, east of the acropolis and near the mouth of the river harbour, in the final years of the 7th century BC. The Torre di Chia belongs to a complex of Spanish coastal towers from the 17th century. It was built in 1578 at the instigation of Viceroy De Moncada and served to defend the mouth of the Rio di Chia. From 1 August 2026, the Torre di Chia was scheduled to open to the public daily.
Marine Protected Area and Landscape
The Area Marina Protetta Capo Spartivento marine protected area covers more than 3,700 hectares of sea and 10 kilometres of protected coastline. Su Giudeu is a beach in Domus de Maria. The Secca di Bithia is designated in the marine protected area as a diving route or dive site. If you organise your days according to your interests, these different coastal features may each be decisive in their own right.
The landscape offers several options for physical activity. Walks are possible in the wooded mountain areas of Domus de Maria. A forest area serves as a wildlife oasis for Sardinian deer and fallow deer. The climb to the promontory of the Torre di Chia is recommended only for people in good physical condition. Physical demands are therefore an important point when planning your days.
