Churches, Baptistery and Traces of Church History

Decimoputzu combines ecclesiastical heritage, prehistoric sites and an agricultural landscape shaped by the Flumini Mannu. For those interested in culture, the area’s historical themes are not limited to a single building, but can also be found at several specific sites in the Decimoputzu area. For those interested in culture and nature, Decimoputzu also offers different perspectives on an area in southern Sardinia that encompasses ecclesiastical heritage, archaeological sites, fields and riverbanks.

The Church of San Giorgio has been documented since the late 11th century. The Vittorini monks from Marseille rebuilt it in Romanesque forms. Mosaic fragments dating from the 3rd century AD were reused in the floor of the baptistery. The parish of Decimoputzu was first documented in 1341. The present church building has been documented under the name Santa Maria since 1560.

The rural church of San Basilio is also part of the sacred history of the surrounding area. It is located about 3 km from Decimoputzu, near the Rio Matta, in an area that was already used in Byzantine times. Alongside San Giorgio, it is another ecclesiastical site in the area surrounding Decimoputzu.

Early Cultures and Archaeological Sites

In Sant’Iroxi near Decimoputzu lies the Domus de Janas-type hypogeum known as the Tomba dei Guerrieri. It dates from the final phase of the Neolithic, the Ozieri culture and the Early Bronze Age. The bronze weapons found at the Tomba dei Guerrieri are now kept at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari; the site where the weapons were found is in Sant’Iroxi near Decimoputzu. Perda Lada is a nuragic giant’s tomb with a vaulted stele, built using cyclopean masonry. The Tomba dei Guerrieri and Perda Lada differ in form: one is a Domus de Janas-type hypogeum, while the other is a giant’s tomb with a vaulted stele. Nuraghe Monte Sa Idda is known for its finds of metal artefacts. Su Casteddu ‘e Fanaris is an impressive complex nuragic site.

Campidano Plain, Fields and Agricultural Landscape

Decimoputzu lies in the southern part of the Campidano Plain. The landscape around the built-up area is characterised by greenhouses and extensive artichoke fields.

Flumini Mannu: Riverside Trails, Reeds and Herons

The Flumini Mannu flows through the Decimoputzu area. Poplars, willows and reeds grow along its banks, providing nesting grounds for grey herons and little egrets. Riverside trails run along the river through reed beds and poplars, making them suitable for walks.

The Feast of San Giorgio is celebrated on the third Sunday in May.
