Marina di Sorso between dunes, beach and coastal trails

Marina di Sorso lies where a seven-kilometre sandy beach, the extensive dune system and a pine forest planted in the 1950s combine to form a distinctive coastal landscape. The beach of Marina di Sorso continues the very long coastline of Platamona. From the sandy beach, the dune system comes first, followed by the pine forest. The dune system lies between the sandy beach and the pine forest.

Coast, dunes and pine forest

Behind Marina di Sorso’s extensive dune system lies a pine forest planted in the 1950s, with numerous other endemic plant species. These include centuries-old junipers of the species Juniperus phoenicea and Juniperus oxicedrus.

The sandy beach of Marina di Sorso is dotted with rare sea lilies and surrounded by Mediterranean maquis. The sea lilies grow in the sandy area; the maquis borders the beach outside the open sandy stretch. This keeps the open sandy area and the vegetated edge zone spatially distinct.

Water sports and surf casting

Marina di Sorso is suitable for kitesports and windsurfing all year round. Surf casting, fishing from the beach, is favoured here by the fish-rich Gulf of Asinara. Gilthead seabream, amberjacks, mullet and sea bass can be found there. The two forms of use are clearly distinct: surf casting remains tied to fishing from the beach, while kitesports and windsurfing are water sports.

Cycling and walking routes

A cycle path runs along the provincial road on the Sorso–Marina di Sorso section. The “In bici sul Litorale” route also allows a long stretch of coastline to be covered by bicycle or on foot. Another connection is provided by the section of the “Cammino di Santu Jacu” that passes through Sorso. It is approximately 25 kilometres long, can easily be covered on foot or by bicycle, and leads to the large square at Marina di Sorso. The cycle path remains focused on the connection between Sorso and Marina di Sorso, while the coastal route places the long waterfront section at the centre. On the Cammino, the approximate distance of around 25 kilometres is combined with the destination at the marina. Anyone wishing to complete the section in full can therefore plan the route as a separate, longer route segment. For a shorter outing, the cycle path or coastal route can be considered as a route in its own right.

Practical orientation on the coast

State Road 200, which runs alongside the coastline, has several turn-offs to the shore known as “pettini”. When travelling there, the position of the relevant shore turn-off is therefore just as important as the road itself. The third of these turn-offs leads to Marina’s large car park. The car park is reached via the road, while the Cammino leads to the large square at Marina di Sorso. Both reference points are at Marina di Sorso.
