Castle, Churches and Archaeological Traces

The Castello dei Principi di Biscari preserves three significant historical phases: its foundation at the end of the 15th century, its refoundation in the 17th century and its reconstruction after an earthquake in the 18th century. The building has been extensively restored; in the process, the monument’s historic fabric was essentially respected while preserving its historical authenticity.

The religious architecture includes the Chiesa di San Vincenzo and the Chiesa Madre di San Nicola di Bari. San Vincenzo has sixteen monolithic, cylindrical columns made of black stone with bases and capitals, as well as a dome. The Chiesa Madre di San Nicola di Bari is the most important church in the town of Acate.

Poggio Biddini is a Neolithic archaeological site on the slope along the right bank of the Dirillo. The Acate area also contains an imposing section of wall belonging to the site that is very likely identified as the city of Odogrillo; it flourished between the 11th and 14th centuries. These sites complement the architectural and religious history with very early and medieval layers of history.

Coast and Nature near Macconi

Macconi is Acate’s coastal village and lies about 13 km from the town center. It owes its name to the high sand dunes characteristic of this stretch of coast. The now-rare Retama, a fragrant white broom, still grows along the Macconi coast.

Wine, Hiking and Traditional Dishes

At the Valle dell’Acate winery in Contrada Bidini, Acate, wine tastings that can be booked online include a guided tour of the 19th-century palmento. The winery also offers an easy hike of about 3 km through the vineyards, followed by a guided wine tasting.

Culinary traditions are also a tangible way to experience Acate. Baddotti di riso is a traditional dish for the Feast of Saint Joseph: rice balls with ricotta, egg, cinnamon and parsley, which are then cooked in meat broth. U tianu is a historic festive dish consisting of pasta baked in a terracotta pot with meat sauce and ricotta. Both dishes offer concrete culinary points of reference for planning your trip.

Palio and Religious Events

The traditional Palio is part of the cultural calendar. It takes place every year on the third Sunday after Easter as a horse race with jockeys along Corso Indipendenza. Folkloric events in Acate also include processions during Holy Week and a sacred performance on Good Friday.
