Culture and olive oil in Chiaramonte Gulfi

Chiaramonte Gulfi offers you several very different ways to experience Sicilian culture: museums are dedicated to olive oil, art, religious topics, embroidery and ornithology. In addition, there is the landscape around Monte Arcibessi and historic paths that connect the town with the surrounding area. This allows you to divide your stay between exhibitions, regional cuisine and walks outdoors.

Olive oil as a regional theme

At the Museo dell'olio, you can see historic techniques and equipment used to produce olive oil from the 17th century to the present day. The exhibits also include a press dating from 1614. The regional importance of the oil is also reflected in the “Monti Iblei” DOP designation, which includes in particular the “Gulfi” subzone assigned to the area of Chiaramonte Gulfi.

“Olio e nons’Olio” explores this topic through the aromas and flavors of the oil. Products made from it also include soap and ice cream. At the beginning of December, Chiaramonte Gulfi also hosts the olive-oil-related event of the same name, “Olio e nons’Olio”.

Art and historic collections

The Casa Museo Liberty is considered a unique exhibition in all of Italy. The objects are displayed there in their natural functional setting. On view are valuable works by artists such as René Lalique, Legras and Calderoni, as well as furniture based on designs by Ernesto Basile and Carlo Zen.

The Pinacoteca De Vita consists of works that the De Vita family donated to the community of Chiaramonte Gulfi at the master's express request (1906–1990). The works on display are connected with the Iblean Mountains area. The Museo di Arte Sacra takes a different approach, with four exhibition areas covering religious ritual, sculpture, painting, as well as furnishings and ceramic decoration.

Embroidery, ornithology and the old town

The Museo del ricamo e dello sfilato focuses on the Sicilian embroidery technique known as Sfilato. The museum is located in an alley next to the historic San Giovanni staircase, within the medieval urban fabric of the old town. It reconstructs the rooms in which Sfilato is produced and displays more than 200 textile pieces, as well as looms and tools from the 18th century.

The Museo Ornitologico contains more than 600 specimens that are rare and significant for Sicilian ornithology. Together with the art collections, it broadens the perspective on Chiaramonte Gulfi to include a natural-history focus, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single museum theme.

La Pineta and historic paths

In the La Pineta area around Monte Arcibessi, which stands at 906 m above sea level, there are quarries, springs, natural caves and old paths. Characteristic dry-stone walls line these paths. The Antica Trasversale Sicula is also interesting for your planning: The route follows the Via Selinuntina, which is now mapped as part of the Sentiero Ibleo, toward Monte Arcibessi and then continues along the Strada delle Neviere to the old railway station of Chiaramonte Gulfi.

The Antica Trasversale Sicula runs from Giarratana to Chiaramonte Gulfi, passing the prehistoric site of Calaforno along the way. This gives you both cultural stops in the town and landscape- and history-focused sections of paths to use as reference when exploring the area.
