Santa Maria Maggiore, Parco Forza, Cava d’Ispica and the historic monastic complexes each offer a distinct focus. When choosing your hotel, you can therefore first decide whether culture, nature or seasonal cuisine should be the main focus of your trip.

Architectural history and sacred art

Santa Maria Maggiore was built in 1700 after the earthquake of 1693. It houses the Simulacrum Cristo alla Colonna. The Loggiato del Sinatra was designed in 1749 by Vincenzo Sinatra from Noto. The Basilica of Santissima Annunziata also reflects the period of reconstruction: it was the first religious building to be rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte bears the mark of the architect Ernesto Basile.

Forza: settlement history and artefacts

The rocky outcrop of Forza was a natural fortress and was inhabited from the Early Bronze Age through the protohistoric period to Greek colonisation. In the Marchionale Palace of Parco Forza, ancillary rooms have been preserved, including a large kitchen and storerooms. The Antiquarium of Parco Forza preserves architectural elements and archaeological artefacts. It is located in one of the underground rooms of the Parco archeologico della Forza. The historical perspective therefore extends from early settlement traces to preserved rooms and material evidence.

Monastery, church and cloister

The monastery of S. Maria di Gesù and its church date from 1515. The church has a single-nave layout, Baroque stucco work from the 18th century and ornate side altars made of marble. The cloister is considered the oldest building in the city. Anyone wishing to compare sacred architecture and historic design will find several clearly distinguishable architectural features here.

Cava d’Ispica and the Presepe Vivente

Its lush natural vegetation can conceal small grottoes and tombs; the natural habitats extend from Pernamazzone to Parco Forza. The Presepe Vivente di Ispica covers a two-kilometre route from the ancient settlement of Spaccaforno to caves at the beginning of the natural canyon of Cava d’Ispica.

Carota Novella: seasonal flavour

The local cuisine also has a precise seasonal connection. The Carota Novella di Ispica IGP reaches marketable maturity as early as 20 February and is available until the beginning of June. It is cylindrical-conical in shape, intensely orange, tender and crisp. If you like to structure your travels around regional products, this vegetable provides a specific point of reference in time.

Choosing a hotel according to your interests

When choosing your hotel in Ispica, you can match these focuses to your own travel pace: sacred buildings and palazzi are suited to culture-oriented days, Cava d’Ispica to an interest in landscapes, and the Carota Novella to a stay with a seasonal culinary accent. This allows you to align your accommodation choice with your interests.
