Laag: Discover Churches, the Dürer Trail and Cycling Routes

Laag appeals to travellers who want to combine historic churches, a cultural heritage trail and cycling routes. Highlights include sacred architecture in Laghetti and St. Florian, as well as paths through vineyards, forests and pastureland leading to natural and scenic destinations. This gives the area a clear basis for a stay combining culture, hiking and cycling.

Churches and historic sites in Laghetti

The Church of San Lorenzo and the Fourteen Holy Helpers was consecrated in 1532. It is accessible to people with disabilities and well signposted. The cemetery church of San Lorenzo is a late Gothic building dating from the 16th century.

The parish church of Laghetti was built in 1941 and 1942 to a design by the Trentino architect Renzo Masè. The triumphal arch features frescoes created in 1944 depicting the Good Shepherd, the four Evangelists and the three martyrs of the Non Valley.

The Klösterle in Laghetti was founded in 1220 as a pilgrims’ hospice and is exceptionally well preserved. Next to the Klösterle stands the small Church of San Floriano in Laghetti. It is Romanesque and is one of the oldest churches in Tyrol; it was first mentioned in 1189. Albrecht Dürer is also associated with this place: in 1494, he spent the night at the hospice of San Floriano and had to take a detour because the Adige Valley was flooded while travelling from Laghetti to Pochi.

Hiking the Dürer Trail

The Dürer Trail starts at the Klösterle in St. Florian/Laghetti and follows Trail No. 7 through the village to the Roman Bridge, then continues to Pochi. Beyond Pochi, it leads through Monte Corno Nature Park to Malga Sauch and Lago Santo.

Along the route from the Klösterle via Laghetti, Pochi and Malga Sauch to Lago Santo, vineyards, forests and pastureland alternate.

If you are looking for a shorter option, a circular hike branches off shortly before Pochi, leads via Garbe and then returns to Laghetti and the Klösterle along Trail No. 5. The section from Laghetti di Egna to Pochi di Salorno is 4.4 km long, involves approximately 400 metres of ascent and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Getting there and cycling

The starting point of the Dürer Trail at the Klösterle in Laghetti can be reached by regional train to Egna-Termeno station, followed by regular bus services to Laghetti/San Floriano. Public parking is available near the Klösterle in St. Florian and in the centre of Laghetti.

The cycle path along the Adige runs between Egna and Salorno near the Laghetti district and continues south to Trento and Rovereto and beyond. For cyclists, the Via Claudia Augusta connects Bolzano and Trento and is also recommended for bike tours starting in Laghetti.

From April to October, a guided tour of the Klösterle in St. Florian/Laghetti is offered at 4 p.m., with telephone reservations required by the previous day. This adds a cultural and historical element to the visit.
