Latzfonser Alm and Latzfonser Kreuz

A scenic circular hike leads from Kaseregg through the Latzfonser Alm to the Latzfonser Kreuz. The destination is located at an altitude of 2,311 metres. The Latzfonser Kreuz is the highest pilgrimage site in South Tyrol and one of the highest pilgrimage sites in Europe. As a result, the hike has a clearly recognisable religious significance in addition to its landscape experience.

The special character of the site includes the “Black Jesus Christ”, a black, carved Gothic wooden cross. Every year in June, it is carried by numerous believers from the parish church in the village of Latzfons to the Latzfonser Kreuz, where it remains throughout the summer.

Traditions and Architectural History

Traditional events are also an important part of village life: in Latzfons, the Almabtrieb, the annual driving down of the cattle from the mountain pastures, is celebrated every year on the second weekend of September. St. James’ Church in Lazfons provides another specific link to the history of the village. The architect Albert Torggler from Merano was responsible for its extension project in 1999.

The carrying of the cross in June and the Almabtrieb on the second weekend of September take place at different times of the year and therefore correspond to different travel periods.

Rock and Winter Tours

The “Nock” climbing garden is located in the wild and romantic Tinne Valley. This small valley lies west of Klausen and stretches south of Säbener Berg as far as Latzfons. The climbing garden offers outdoor climbing opportunities for beginners and advanced climbers, as well as climbing courses.

Several different destinations are available for the cold season. A winter and snowshoe hike leads from the Kühhof car park to the Klausner Hütte. A ski tour runs from Steineben to Lorenzispitze, called Cima S. Lorenzo in Italian, on the Latzfonser Alm. There is also a natural toboggan run and a family toboggan run there.

Kaseregg, Kühhof and Steineben are the most popular starting points with parking facilities for the Latzfonser Alm; the Öberst car park is also used for winter tours.

Getting There and Starting Points

Latzfons can be reached by public transport. From Klausen, line 343 connects with line 342 in the village of Feldthurns; from Brixen, line 342 runs directly. Both connections operate hourly. The hourly service applies to both connections, although the journey from Klausen initially requires a change in Feldthurns. By car, follow the provincial road towards Feldthurns and then continue to Latzfons. Klausen is 10 kilometres away.

A Regional Speciality

The Pfattner Johann butcher’s shop in Latzfons is also a useful local reference point. In the 2015 speck comparison test, its sample received the gold award among 47 South Tyrolean speck hams.
