Rasen-Antholz: Discover Nature, History and Trails

Rasen-Antholz offers a combination of natural surroundings, a water landscape and history, with several clearly distinct recreational activities. For planning your trip, the area can therefore be explored through its landscape as well as through trails, family-oriented experiences, cycling and historical sites.

Natural surroundings between the nature park and lake

The Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park also extends into the municipality of Rasen-Antholz. 38 % of the municipality’s total area of 12,092 hectares lies within the nature park. Another defining landscape feature is Antholz Lake: it covers 44 hectares, is up to 38 metres deep and is the third-largest mountain lake in South Tyrol.

The mountain Hochnall is located in the immediate surroundings of Rasen-Antholz. The mountains Regola Brusada, Montone and Almleitenkofel are also in the surrounding area. The nature park, the lake and the mountain surroundings therefore provide different landscape reference points for your planning.

Circular trails and public transport connections

Two circular trails run through the Rasner Möser biotope. Antholz Lake and the lakeside circular trail are also important points of reference when planning routes: bus route 431 connects Olang-Antholz railway station with Antholz Lake, the starting point of the lakeside circular trail.

Castles and architectural history

The area’s history is reflected in several historical sites. Neurasen Castle Ruins were built around 1200 by the Lords of Rasen and were already ruins by around 1680. Altrasen Castle Ruins held high jurisdiction in the 13th century and belonged to the domain of the Counts of Gorizia in the Puster Valley.

The historic bridge also adds its own architectural-historical accent. The architecturally significant stone bridge dating from 1847 was restored in 2011 according to the original plans and preserved as a document of modern road-building craftsmanship.

Experiences for families and active visitors

The Wasserwaldile adventure area offers play, exercise and water-based experiences, with a water course, a wobble bridge, balancing courses and stepping stones. The experience also includes the marble water channel “Anton’s Journey through the Valley of Water Games”. Niederrasen Leisure Park has a traditional 12-hole miniature golf course. Those travelling with children will find several specific opportunities here for exercise and playing together.

There is also a clearly defined offering for cycling enthusiasts: the Antholz Niedertal Mountain Bike Area offers three downhill routes with different levels of difficulty. It also has a pump track for children. This allows you to distinguish between different levels of difficulty and the children’s pump track when planning your day.

Further cultural destinations in the surrounding region

The Resti del Castello Sant'Uberto ruins are located in the wider region surrounding Rasen-Antholz. The Chiesetta di San Giovanni in Ranui church is also located in the wider surrounding region. Both destinations complement the historical points of interest already found in Rasen-Antholz itself.
