Sarnthein is home to the parish church of the Assumption of Mary, Kränzelstein Tower and the Rohrerhaus. The classic Horseshoe Tour into the eastern Sarntal Alps starts from here. This makes it possible to explore the region through historic buildings, rural culture and a multi-day hike.

Sarnthein and its historic buildings

The Church of Mary, today the parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Sarnthein, was first mentioned in 1309. Its church tower is the oldest structure; it was built in the 14th century. These historical reference points make the church an illustrative place to engage with the history of sacred buildings in Sarnthein.

The little Church of St. Cyprian in Sarnthein was first mentioned around 1328. In the mid-15th century, it was remodelled in the Gothic style. The little church contains well-preserved old frescoes. For those interested in culture, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary and the little Church of St. Cyprian, with their historical significance, are therefore the main points of interest in Sarnthein.

Kränzelstein Tower has been open to visitors since 2022 following renovation. It was probably built in the 13th century as a residence for the ministeriales of the Counts of Eppan. The renovation preceded its opening to visitors. Its medieval origins, presumed function and visitor status since 2022 give the tower a clearly defined cultural and historical profile.

The Rohrerhaus in Sarnthein is an old farmhouse that was converted into a museum. The house includes an old smoke kitchen and a bread oven. The Rohrerhaus is open to visitors seasonally from mid-June to the end of October. This makes rural building traditions and everyday culture tangible in a specific building.

The Horseshoe Tour and the farmers’ market

The classic Horseshoe Tour starts from Sarnthein in the eastern Sarntal Alps and covers seven or eight stages. The two stage options provide you with different planning frameworks for a multi-day hike. Sarnthein serves as the starting point, while the eastern Sarntal Alps form the landscape through which the tour runs.

A farmers’ market is held every Saturday in the church square in Sarnthein.
